Technically Brooklyn & Queens are part of Long Island although no one ever considers it. Long Island actually consists of 4 counties Kings, Queens, Nassau & Suffolk.
You're absolutely right, people look at me like I have 3 heads when I tell them this lol. I actually once had a 'Long Islander' ask me what bridge takes you to Queens (from LI)

Now that's strange. Technically I thought it was considered NYC as one of the 5 boroughs. It's attached to LI but considered NYC.

Re: Where is everyone from...
I have to agree..... If Queens and Brooklyn are considered part of the 5 boroughs, then how can they be considered Long Island? Having grown up on the Queens/LI border I always saw the sign that read 'Welcome to Queens, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.' Now if Queens was part of LI, wouldn't the mayor have been the same as LI?
Forgive me for my ignorance if I am wrong.... this IS an interesting thread however....

OK... I'm a dork and did an internet search.... for an incredibly BORING history lesson of NYC and it's boroughs, check out: http://www.nygbs.org/info/articles/five_boroughs.html
Apparently, although physically attached to LI, Queens and Brooklyn are a part of NYC. You have Queens County, Kings County (Brooklyn), Bronx County, New York County (NYC), and Richmond County (Staten Island).
