Where to buy a vacation/weekend home that's not too far from LI?
MY DH and I are thinking of purchasing a second home for getaways. We just started talking about this, so it's not going to happen for quite some time, but I want to start researching areas.
We'd like something waterfront, on a lake or something.
Lake George maybe? Any other locations?

Poconos? Catskills area--there are some small lakes there....I like Saratoga Springs better than Lake George, and it is about 1/2 hour from the lake...

Real Close to the City - but far enough away for a vacation home is the North - Middle of New Jersey (off of Route 80)
Lake Hopatcong & Lake Hiawatha

I went to Northville this Summer, just south of Lake George, on Lake Sagandaga, and it was wonderful. I think you can still pick up a cabin/'camp' at a reasonable price. I would love to also!

Litchfield in CT is beautiful--I went to high school there. No large lakes that I can think of, but quaint old towns and a very peaceful atmosphere.

Lake George area is really very nice. The drive is long but otherwise not too bad.

Block Island, RI - You can take the ferry from Montauk (no cars allowed on that one) for weekend trips or take the ferry from Port Judith, RI (allows vehicles) for longer stays when a lot of belongings are needed. (My DH and I have talked about buying a summer home on BI.)

If you're thinking of Lake George, you should look into Saratoga Springs (very close to it). My Dad lives up there & it's beautiful. He has a home on Saratoga Lake with plenty of land. The town has lots of great restaurants & shops, & you can't beat the excitement in the Summer (esp. August) with the races!!! It's also breathtaking in the Fall/Winter!!!

We have friends that just bought a vacation place in Saugerties, NY (its like near the Catskills and Hudson river, south of Albany)..
Their house is on a lake....its a beautiful area in upstate NY, - not too far from the city. Abuot 90 mins from the city - they live in the city. We visited over the summer - it is pretty. Good luck! http://saugerties.ny.us/

My family has a home in the Berkshires....beautiful area. Skiing in the winter, Tanglewood (outdoor concert hall), lakes and swimming in the summer. It's 3 1/2 hrs away from LI in Western Mass.
