Where to start??

I just had a baby and am going to start scrap booking. Any suggestions on classes or books for ideas?
I just finished a shadow box with her announcement and decided I wanted to keep the memories going. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Where to start??

I would suggest checking out the Magazine Simple Scrapbooking. You can also check out the website Scrapbook.com. They have alot of good ideas, and you can post questions to others.

Re: Where to start??

You might want to inquire at Michael's - they usually have scrapbook classes each month. When I first started I actually did a lot of searches online with the key word scrapbooking and found lots of resources. Lifetimemoments.com was very helpful too.

Some important things to understand:

Archival Safe: the idea being that you want to preserve these memories so all materials we use should be archival safe (most scrapbook products are)

Albums: There are a variety of albums out there - post bound and strap hinge are used most often and there are lots of sizes now - 12x12 is used most commonly because it allows for more photos in a layout but 8x8 is becoming very popular and 6x6 make great brag books.

Adhesives: There are a ton of brands and types. See what works best for you and maybe experiment a little. I found that I prefer the zig two-way glue and photo mounts. The Herma tabs are very popular.

Papers: Again - tons of varieties, colors, and textures. A walk down a scrapbook aisle will keep you busy for quite a while when it comes to picking out papers and cardstock. Again - personal choice. Cardstock is a heavier paper and can be used for an entire layout or cut down to mount pics on.

Embellishments: This is where I get in trouble $$-wise. There are so many adorable things out there and I want each and every one - in doubles. These make great accents to pages. Jolee's By You is a popular accent but it's not just limited to 3-d stickers...you can use ribbons and buttons - people get very creative with embellishments.

Advice: My style has changed a lot since I first started and every now and again I will look at an old layout and cringe...so it's not rare for me to change a few. I prefer not to change them all - it's important to me to see how my style has changed and transformed over the years. But for those layouts that I do change - I have found it very helpful to have copies of pics - either saved on a CD/PC/Shutterfly or actual copies. This way if I glued it in - I don't have to worry about damaging the pic when I make changes - I just get another one! Plus when I first started I had a tendency to over-crop (cutting the pic to sort of zoom in) and would ruin plenty of pics - it's nice to have copies so that it's not a complete loss.
