FH & I want to start looking at some homes to get an idea what we can afford and exactly what 'fix me upper' means to some...
Someone told us that you should first make sure that you will get approved for a loan...that you a real estate agency really won't take you seroiusly if they don't know if you will get approved for the loan or not...I'm just confused as towhat steps we need to take (if any) before we find something that we really love...

I would get prepapproved - they take your bank statements etc... then you will have a better idea of what you can afford - there are three things we held valuable - location of house (midblock? behind a gas station etc), school district, and overall condition/value of updates to house. (but many other things too...)
Get an idea of towns you like and then drive around them search mlsli.com a lot and go to open houses too!
After seeing a few houses (in our case around 100) you'll be able to make a decision about what house is worth bidding on in no time.
