Where to stay in Puerto Rico?

Where to stay in Puerto Rico?

A few friends and I are going to Puerto Rico in July. We are trying to decide on a hotel. We got a great deal at the Ritz Carlton but I'm worried that even to eat there will be so expensive. We also got a good deal at a boutique hotel called The Water Club. But we're also looking into the Caribe Hilton and the Wyndham- but the Wyndham in San Juan. Has anyone stayed at any of these hotels or can offer other recommendations?
Thanks!

il conquiestidor i think i spelled it right also condato plaza. condato is not too expensive but il conquiestidor is so big and seems like a resort in itself. ive been to pr over 5 times stayed in condato 2 times and the ramada 2 doors down 3 times . if you want to save money on hotel to use for the rest of your trip then the ramada is 99 a night. the condato i beleve was 199 or 240 depending on when you plan to go. el yunjue is the rain forest it is really beautiful and worth going to. there is so much to do there. also condato has a casino in it thats opened 24/7.

Fh and I just came back from Wyndhan El San Juan Resort and Casino in Isla Verde. We got back on Monday. The hotel is beautiful and the service was good. We got there Friday night and a pipe had broken and some of the rooms were flooded, so they had to put us in a parlor room (a nice room, but it had a sofa bed). They gave us a $100 credit to the room that we could use anywhere in the hotel and 2 breakfast vouchers. They told us that they would change our room the next morning. They told us to let them know when we were up and to leave our bags packed in our room and that they would take all our bags to the new room for us. To make a long story short, they ended up changing our room after 5pm on Saturday (first they told us that it would be ready at 1pm, then 3pm and finally they told us 5pm). And when they did change it we had to call them to find out, then go downstairs w/all our luggage, get the new key and take all our luggage back up to the new room. They did upgrade us to a nicer room though. They ended up giving us an ocean view room ( I don't think they have an ocean front rooms) with a jacuzzi. I'm not usually picky like that, but FH paid over $200 a night and for that amount of money and since the problem was theirs, not ours, they should have been more accomodating with respect to the room change.
As for expense, the hotel is expensive!! We spent about $150 each night on dinner (we ate the Palms Restaurant and the Italian rest.). The food was great though. Breakfast buffet was $40 and lunch (a cheesburger w/fries, chicken fingers and 3 pina coladas) came out to $50 at the restaurant that's on the beach.
Drinks (pina coladas, daiquiris, etc. are about $8 each.
We didn't rent jet skis, but I saw that rentals were $60 for 1/2 hour for 2 people.

Also, the hotel seemed to be THE place to be. It was PACKED everynight. People were dressed VERY well. There's a club, bars in the lobby and a casino. Also, there were weddings, sweet 16s and proms going on. So if you want calm, this is not the place to go.

Another tip...try to book the flight on Jet Blue. We went with American Airlines and they were AWFUL. We were delayed going and coming home. It wasn't just that, the service on and off the plane were awful. Fh and I just sent a 2 page letter with all our complaints.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with

Here are some pics from our hotel room:

I stayed at the Marriott San Juan Resort and Stellaris Casino and thought it was really nice, right on the beach, etc. Rate was around $199/night in January.

We often stay in San Juan on Isle Verde when we go on our celebrity cruises. We usually spend 1 - 2 days there. We have stayed at both the Intercontinental and the Caribe Hilton. I don't remember the Caribe Hilton as much b/c it was a few years since we were there last.

The intercontinential is expensive though - We eat lunch at the hotel and go out to eat. This past trip we ate twice at this fish restaurant rated as the best in San Juan. I will have to look up what it was called if you are interested

I lived in PR and if you eat in the tourist places like the Palm restaurant which is amazing than you will be spending $$$.

I really don't have any suggestion about San Juan as I really don't like that area but the majority of the hotels are beautiful and expensive. I like the south of PR and the beaches IMO are much nicer. If you do look into going south of PR, I suggest Guanica and the resort that I love is www.copamarina.com.

We stayed at the Westin Rio Mar in Puerto Rico about 3 years ago - we really enjoyed it! The grounds/pools/beach were gorgeous and the food was excellent and reasonable. Very beautiful place!

Thanks girl for your suggestions. Has anyone stayed at the Water Club? It's in Isla Verde. Is that a better place to be than San Juan?

Please give me all restaurant suggestions!!

I went a few years ago and stayed at The Grand in San Juan. It was absolutely beautiful.

The El San Juan in Isla Verde is fantastic, I am looking forward to going back one day. The Palm is a nice treat, but there is a great local restaurant nearby thats not too expensive.

Whatever you do DO NOT stay at the Caribe Hilton. We stayed there for two nights on our honeymoon in February and it was a nightmere. Our shower would not work, so we tried the bathtub and the bathtub would only trickle water - so we could not take a shower or a bath. There was mold all over the balcony, I could go on and on. We complained and complained, but they did not switch our rooms until 6 pm on the second night!

EWW- it has been at least 6 years since we stayed there - that is horrible I hope they compensated you in some way - the scary part is they are listed as one of the top hotels there

The Ritz Carlton or the El San Juan are hands down the nicest hotels in the San Juan area. JMO! My friend stayed at the Water Club and LOVED it! So I can reccomend that one too! Pretty much anything in the 'Isla Verde' area is really nice. I personally like it better than the 'Condado' area.... Again- JMO!
