Which antivirus program is better...Norton or McAfee

I have the basic antivirus program with McAfee installed now but I don't know if I should run my Norton package or upgrade the McAfee package. Does it matter if the Norton package was bought 4 years ago for a different computer? I imagine if I update it via the web it should stop current viruses.

Just wondering - the whole McAfee package is $50 and I already have the Norton CD's.

We have Norton. I am wondering though why someone accidently sent me something with a virus and Norton didn't pick up on it. I had like 14 days to delete it or the virus would strike.

I like MCCAFFE better than Norton. I didnt buy it though....My friend burnt a copy of it for me.

Do you also have a firewall? Especially if you have opt online, you should get a firewall. I have ZoneAlarm....

Norton has a firewall.

Scott you're right I do have Optimum Online. I will install now.

Sue, it's a 'wall' of protection against hackers that can get into your computer files via modem.

I think it's more vulnerable if you have a 'direct line' like DSL or cable modem or a t-1 line (high speed access).

Scott...someone told me I should turn off the cable modem when I'm not online. But Optimum's instructions say 'for best performance' I should always keep it on. But can't hackers get into the computer even if I turn it off, but not the modem? Do you know offhand?

I haven't turned it off since I got the computer. But all that's on here is wedding stuff. =)

Yeah I wouldnt know if they can get into the computer if the modem is off. If you dont have a firewall, I would get one and install it as soon as possible...So you dont get hacked. It can happen to anyone....One of my friends from the civic board I am on got hacked just the other day...
