I know the church says that you are supposed to book them first but I am concerned that I may choose a RH far away which would make the church impractical. Which did you book first ceremony site or RH???

Re: Which comes first.. RH or the church??
Oh tough call... which is more important to you? If you have a church that you attend regularly and want to use it, you may want to see what days are available when you want and then see what RH's you want to book with...
If you don't have your heart set on a specific church, I would book the RH first, and then scan the area for churches, or possibly just officiants to use at the RH itself for the ceremony.

I know that churches REALLY dislike when you consult RHs before them. We did not book the date at our church before we booked the RH, but rather met with the priest and talked about possible dates. We then went to the RHs with the available dates and got back to him when we had booked a RH so that he could officially book us. If a church is important to you and your FH (which they asked us) then you should feel that that is the wedding, so it's as important if not more to book there as it is the RH. Usually they want to meet with you, not to book, but just to see that you are good candidates for marriage in the church. They'll be much happier to work around your schedule and location if you see them first. And, probably not insulted if you choose another church. They just want your ceremony to be in the church, not necessarily theirs. Are you Catholic? If so, most churches in the diocese really cooperate together as far as getting records together, doing Pre Cana for you, etc.

Yes, we are both Roman Catholic. I know FH would like to get married in his childhood church if it is possible (which is fine w/ me if it works w/ the RH location). Another slight complication is FH wants his cousin to marry us (he is a priest) when his sister got married the church did not have an issue with the request. I am just concerned how bringing our own priest would go over if we end up getting married at a different church.

First we went to different venues, when we decided which one we wanted we picked out a couple of dates....then acted right away and called the church. Once we got an open date for the church, we called the RH and they 'penciled us in' and then we went in person to make the final arrangements :) I believe most RH should be willing to work with you regarding penciling in...

We met with the RH first and they held our date for a week (no payment). We then visited the church and booked the date we wanted. Went back to the RH and put our deposit down. I know it seems annoying to go back and forth, but now I am at ease that we have the church and RH we wanted
Check with your RH and see if they will hold the date for a week or two.

WE ment with RH first but didn't book anything till we had the church booked. My mom insisted on us getting the church first lol. But we looked around at RH and found one we really liked and then went to book the church a few days after. Then made the appt for the RH. Now everything is all booked and secured!!! With so much time before the wedding idk if it really matters that much which you book first but i hope this helped!!!!

Most churches are really good about visiting clergy. I think you will be fine. Don't be afraid to just ask! I know a ton of Catholics who have had visiting priests. Just went to one last weekend, and another this past June. Don't worry, you're not the only one!

If you still haven't booked your RH yet, I would definitely go to the church first - pick out a date that is available - I was engaged back in May of this year and they already had their 2012 book available - be aware that a lot of churches have different rules about when they will do a wedding with different time slots so you will have to figure that in along with what their mass schedules are - ie: you will not be able to have a 4:00 wedding mass on a Sat night when their regular mass is at 5:00. HTH!

Crashing...
Your Church First.
Church can def. give you a BIG hassle! Even if this is UR Church you have going to forever!
Church has give a lotta troubles to so many ppl sometimes...
Plus Church DOES feels offended if u try to set up ur wedding date by the RH date instead of the date Church has available.
We did the Church first, we booked the Church, Once we had the 'Ok' for the Church, We continue with the Next thing, RH.
BTW: IMO, Church is the MOST IMPORTANT THING. RH is JUST A PARTY, Just a celebration after the MAIN thing, which is YOUR WEDDING. Your wedding will happen at Church, Not at the RH (since u say u will get married in a Catholic Church)

Re: Which comes first.. RH or the church??
We did RH first =( But, i did call the church several times to annoy them with questions about dates. Hopefully, they won't give me a hard time with the date. They started to yell at me when I told them I booked the RH lol but then I told them it was for 2012 and then they said they didn't even have the book for that year made yet. Soo hopefully we are okay.

They say the church should be booked 1st BUT we actually did as someone mentioned above and held our date at the RH and then spoke to our priest I dont think it matters unless you are planning something in a short time span in which case many churches will only have 1 or 2 weddings per day max so you need to book them quickly
