I love them both. However, if you can only go to one and want an island that is both beautiful and has a little bit of nightlife, I would recommend Maui.
We are going back to both but spending more time on Maui since it is our favorite.

we are doing 5 nights in kauai, 2 nights on the big island and 5 nigths in maui! fh actually just made some dinner reservations for us - i am so excited!!

we're actually going to both, but if i had to choose, it'd be maui bc you can get the beautiful and remote wilderness along with the big luxury hotels and nightlife. it's also much more central to the other islands for daytrips (i.e. ferry to oahu or flight to the big island) while kauai is all the way at the end of the chain.

i'm actually going to The Big Island because i wanted the honeymoon to be relaxing with not a lot of people around
i heard Kauai is awesome and secluded and quiet - Maui has a lot going on with a lot of tourists and people. depends on what kind of honeymoon you want but you can't go wrong with either! it's hawaii!

i may be able to do both which would be great! but right now its one or the other... we are getting a vacation via my dads marriott points :) so we'll see.. thanks for the input girls!!

We are using Marriot points too, for one of our two hotels.
Go to Maui. It is the best island by far. There is a lot to do, its decently built up, but still has its charm. Its also the one that has the quintessential white sand beaches and tons of sun. The Maui Marriot is in Wailea, which is the dessert side, so barely any rain. Its also pretty close to the fishing village of Lahaina.
Just one warning about the Kauai Marriot, its near the airport. They say jets fly over all day long. Though it doesn't wreck the ratings, and most people say that it just is a dull roar that doesn't wreck the view and beauty of the hotel, people commented enough on trip advisor and some of the sites and books to make my very light sleeper fh decide to not go there. We decided on Maui and the Big Island, but were doing the Marriot on the Big Island because its supposed to be the most beautiful of all the Marriots with a large infinity pool.

Thanks for this site...We are also trying to figure out what we want to do for our honeymoon and hawaii is up there but didnt know what island we wanted to go I took the test and now going to have him do it 2 and see if there are any mataches....

Just an FYI on that test, not sure how good it is because it gives Lanaii a 0 for romance, privacy and snorkeling. It has one of the best snorkeling beaches in the world. And personally I find it so private its boring. Its also so romantic that Bill Gaites rented the whole island out for himself for his honeymoon.
Sorry girls, I don't mean to sound like a know it all, its just I have been to Hawaii 7 times. My parents have been there 12. I was such a regular there for a while I have friends on Maui who are natives. So I know it well. Hawaii is my favorite place on earth.
