Which Pump?

Which Pump?

For The Mom's that pump. Which pump do you use? I bought the avent isis & I'm not crazy about it. It hurts my hand after a while & it leaks out of the bottom of the petal. I was trying to save the money on the electric ones, They seems so expensive. If that's the way to go which one is best & where did you buy it from?

I bought the single Medela pump from BRU

I think this really depends on your situation. Are you going back to work? Are you trying to get really serious about the breastfeeding? I think I would call a lactation consultant - there is probably one at the hospital you delivered at that you can contact.

As far as what I have - I have the double Medela Instyle. If you are really pumping to supply your baby with milk while you are away, you're probably gonna need that. It's heavy duty and I just think anything less will be a waste of your time.

Re: Which Pump?

I have been trying to pump evey few hours. But I have the Isis & it does nothing but aggravate me so I give up. I had some gift cards to BRU so I though the medela electric one would be good. Not sure of the name but it just does one side, & there is not much suction w/ that. So now I've bought 2 pumps that stink. I thought it would be good but now I've wasted more money when I should have just bought the more expensive one to begin w/ & save myself the aggravation. And I read that they were both good.
That's why I was wondering one's you are all using. And where to buy from. I am clueless with the pumps.

I just looked at the medela website. There are like 4 different in style pumps. Which is the one that you both have?

Re: Which Pump?

Single side hand or small electric mini-pumps are not what you need to build your supply. Those are for full time nursing moms who need an occassional bottle to go to the movies or out to dinner.
You need a PIS. Look at that link I gave you above. They are a lot cheaper there. The PIS has a backpack or briefcase carrycase. If you are a SAHM the briefcase is fine, and les expensive. I have the PIS advanced, which is new. I believe Jenny and Melissa have the orginal.

hm....I don't think I have anything advanced. Mine is briefcase style...double pump....I guess it's the original . It was right around $200.

Re: Which Pump?

Just wanted to post another ebay link to this seller that was recommended to me.

breastpumps4you

The Pump in Style Original comes to $199.99 with shipping.
She sells the Pump In Style Advanced for $209.99 with shipping (although she doesn't have any of them listed at the moment)
100% positive feedback and she's suthorized to sell Medela products as well, so all the warranties are intact.

You'll save about $100 off the BRU retail plus tax price on both models.

Re: Which Pump?

What's the diffeence between the Advanced and the Original (besides $10?)

Re: Which Pump?

Why are you pumping? Just like the others said, it depends on your needs. I rented a hospital grade pump just to increase my supply. I am a SAHM and Lyla doesn't get bottles anymore, so I only need to pump now if I'm engorged. I have the electric (plug-in or battery-operated) single medela pump.

I don't plan on breastfeeding full time.
I'm hoping to get into the groove of having a supply of breast milk so that DH can also be a part of the whole feeding routine.

Do you think a single pump would be good enough?

Susan, it depends on how your supply is, and how many bottles a day do you need for your husband to feed the baby. JMO, but I think if you decide to nurse, breastfeeding IS something that you have to do full time. It's a committment that requires more than anything I've ever done. During all those days where I was having a hard time, I just kept telling myself, 'this is my job right now'.

I had a hard time pumping and nursing all day just to get bottles, and it wasn't for me. In order to increase and then maintain my supply I had to pump everytime Lyla had a bottle. And, I also had to pump while nursing her, or after nursing her. So, I was basically a milking cow all day long between pumping and nursing!!!

In the end it wasn't worth it to me, especially at night because I was still up pumping while DH was giving her a bottle. Basically, it didn't make sense for both of us to be up, and for me to be pumping while I could just be nursing! If I had a better supply back then, it may have been different. DH did other things like bathed Lyla and changed diapers. And, we started solids at 5 months, so he was able to participate in feeding her then.

I know you weren't asking me specifically, but just wanted to share.

Any input at all on the matter is appreciated.
I'm still looking into it and researching the pros and cons. My cousin is BFing in the early morning and daytime. She pumps so that her husband can feed in the evenings. Ideally that's what I'd like to do, but we'll see how it all goes.

Some more unsolicited advice...I wouldn't go into the task of learning to BF with this perspective. You should be BFing (at least for the first 6-8 weeks) exclusively, just to build the supply and demand relationship between what the baby wants and what Mommy produces.

After your supply is well-established and the baby is latching on just fine, you can then begin to possibly introduce a bottle and pump while someone else does a feeding. Be aware that there's also a chance your baby could develop nipple confusion by doing this, or even develop a preference for the bottle, which flows faster than Mom. Niha is right - it is actually MORE work to pump sometimes and BF at others. Good luck, whatever you decide!

Re: Which Pump?

I have the Medela Double Deluxe pump. I think it works great. I am basically just breastfeeding, but I have a class on Wednesdays that is 3 hours long and I would absolutely hate it if Madeleine were to scream her head off for her daddy because she was hungry.

She had no problem taking a bottle at a week old, granted she only gets like 1 or 2 bottles a week, and that's when I'm in class.

But I definitely agree with the other moms... pumping is a hassle! I get stressed making sure she has enough milk in the fridge or the freezer. I probably wouldn't pump if I didn't have too... well, maybe for those times when she sleeps through a feeding and I feel as if my boobies are going to explode!

Re: Which Pump?

OK every thing everyone said makes sense but what about the moms who BF on one breast and pump the other at every feeding? and then switch off the next time--

Isnt this common?
