ok - fh and i have run into a small problem with hotels. i am getting married @ leonards - and they recommend the great neck inn.
the place is literally 1/2 a mile away and very nice - but they want $179 a night (which was a little more than i had anticipated for my guests) - but i said whatever and planned on booking them. they sent me a contract with all the BS fees - $12 a night for parking, no shuttle service, and the cards you put in the invites - they provide double your room block - and sfter that they charge $2 a piece!!!
so i am a big person pf prinicipal and was a little flipped off by these dumb charges - so i looked for a new hotel.
we went today to the adria hotel and conference center - who was charging $119 a night - free parking, free invite things, but still no shuttle - except they will block the rooms for us in the ramada next door. the place looked like they should charge by the hour! the bathroom sink was next to the bed!! the toilet didnt have a tank!! the room was so small and cramped!! it wasnt dirty or anything - but it was just so....i dunno....not the great neck inn.
anyway - here is my question - since this looks like a case of 'you get what you pay for' - if you were going to stay somewhere after a wedding would you rather pay more and get a posh place - or pay less and look at it just as a place to crash for a night?? i am not sure what i want to do...need some opinions....

Re: which would you rather?
Did you try the Anchor Inn(?) it's next to Pier 25A on Northern Blvd. in Bayside, not very far at all from the Adria. Check it out

Yikes! How does this whole thing work, when you block rooms off are you basically just resrving the rooms? What if your OOT guests don't show are you obligated to pay for a certain number of rooms?

no i am not obligated for room that are not booked - the contract just basically holds a set # of rooms for my wedding @ a 'special' rate.

Re: which would you rather?
I blocked off 10 rooms for the night before the wedding and 15 rooms for the night of the wedding. A month before the wedding, I have to see if any of the OOT guests have booked any rooms. If none are taken, then it goes back to the hotel. I will not be charge for anything.

Re: which would you rather?
I have a similar problem and I decided to book with the nice hotel. Fox Hollow Inn it was $60 more expensive but 100% better than the Executive Inn. I will reserve blocks of rooms at the Fox Hollow and a cheaper Hotel Bestwestern so that my guest have more than one choice.

Re: which would you rather?
Keep in mind that if you don't meet your block minimum, the price will not be the discounted block price you were given. I think most hotels work this way. If you only have six guests that book and your block min is 10, the price may revert to the standard nightly rate.

Have you considered a bed and breakfast? Or simply tell your guest that you can offer the names of hotels in the area so you aren't going to be charged for rooms you couldn't fill or hear your family complain about the price. Also people like to pick out their own hotels and I'm sure most of your guest mostly likely lived in long island at some point. So they have an idea where everything is.
I was going to do the blocking of the hotels but my dad was telling he, my uncle and my two cousins were going to a motel for like $ 79 a night because it was more affordable. My grandfather and his girlfriend a get better deal staying at a senior motel.
Also with the internet, people can go to hotels.com and get a great deal. Its not like back in the day whe you had to make long distant phone calls to book a hotel.

OMG.. Trish.. i ran into the same problem with the same hotel ( I am also getting married at Leonards)
$179 is insane They gave me the same price, but unfortunately, I didn't even ask them about the additional fees. Leonards also reccommends The Andrew Hotel. Im not familiar with the area, but they told me that it is about the same distance that The Inn at Great Neck is to Leonards. I dont know what to do either. According to everyone I asked that knows the area, I was told that there are none of the larger chain hotels like the Marriott or the Hilton close by
What I am probably going to do is just tell my guests about the price of the Inn @ Great neck (by word of mouth) Im going to keep scouting the area for nearby hotels. Luckily for me, Im not having too many out-of-towners (except for some of my family coming in from Italy, whom will be staying with family anyway)
I'll keep my ears open. If I find anything, I will let you know. I know that there are a bunch of us getting married at leonards, so hopefully we can come up with something!

Re: which would you rather?
We blocked rooms at 2 hotels for the wedding - The Inn at Fox Hollow and Best Western. Obviously the Inn at Fox Hollow is right next door to the reception. I was really upset when I learned that it would be $190 per night for my guests. So we then blocked rooms at the Best Western where the rate is $99 per night for king bed. We went inside the rooms and they were basic but nice. We decided to let our guests decided.
Surprisingly, most guests have booked rooms at the Inn at Fox Hollow.

That's a great idea...
I ended up blocking at Wingate Inn but also providing info about Red Roof. But, Red Roof was only about 30 bucks cheaper and had no breakfast or shuttle for them. I haven't heard anybody booking the Red Roof. But we have a lot at the Wingate.
My suggestion would be to give two different hotels... keep searching around to find one...and with Leonards being so close to the Queens border, I would try there too.

Tric - I think you should block rooms at another hotel just to give your guest options. Some might want to spend a lot of money others are just looking to crash.

How about the Roslyn Claremont? Not too far. I don't know about the shuttles but you can always book that separately.

Did you try the Andrew Hotel in Great Neck? I am not sure about shuttles but they are right down the road from Leonard's.

yes - please if you find another place let me know. we checked out the Andrew hotel - VERY nice - but it was much more 'business' oriented and had NO BAR!! (sorry if i sound like a lush - but i know we are going to want to party when we get back to that hotel)
to me the bar is a big deal - that is kinda why i feel like i dont want to offer 2 hotels. i kinda want everyone contained in one place so we can still all be together having a good time after the wedding is over. (i know that may be a little selfish)

Re: which would you rather?
As a guest I would rather stay in a nice place and pay. If the Bride & Groom recommended a nasty place, I would think they were nuts!
