FH and I are having a 'discussion' about which is better. What do you think and why?
TIA!
We are working on making my e-ring setting and there is an obvious price difference... I am very active- I am a vet, so my job is very hands-on.
Thanks for all your advice...I still don't know We can afford to do either. The ring is going to be antique style- I want to say plantinum, but it is more expensive (ie i feel bad), but then i don't wear alot of jewerly usually, but its going to be forever...ahh!
so, next Q-14K or 18 K gold, thoughts?

I like white gold myself - it is sturdier and IMO platinum is not worth the extra money - (id rather more diamonds ) esp if you are not gentle with your ring and do work with your hands. .
I agree...I can't tell the difference and I don't think it's worth the extra money. If the white gold fades, you can always have it dipped in rhodium to brighten it up.

white gold! to me it looks shinier and definately the harder of the two! with my rough hands..it was definately the better choice...plus the price difference, white gold saved money!!!

Re: White Gold or Platinum?
i vote white gold, my wedding and e-ring are white gold, my friend has a platinum ring and she says its heavy. Only down side of white gold is that you have to get it re-dipped every now and then

Re: White Gold or Platinum?
I know a lot of people have site White Gold on here, but FYI, White Gold is not invincible and will scratch. My e-ring is white and gold and it has a TON of scratches on the bottom. It actually looks pretty horrible, and I've only had the ring for 10 months and I got the ring from a pretty well known store with great quality jewelry. So regardless of which metal you go with, you may not want to go with a totally plain ring because either way it's going to scratch. Maybe look into something with a design on it?

I cant tell the difference. My e ring is white gold and my wedding band is platinum(we got a sick deal, thats why we went with it even though its not the same as my e ring) when they are next to each other you cant tell the difference.
I had the exact same experience! DH picked out my ering, but we went shopping together for bands. I fell in love with a band that happened to be platinum. I didn't want to spend extra for platinum over white gold because I couldn't tell the difference. Because it was a week before they were going on vacation, they gave it to me for an incredible price so we got the platinum band. From the front, you can't see any difference, however, when I turn my hand over and you look at the back of the rings, the white gold does get yellow -- you see the difference when they are together. BUT I don't think its such a big deal - -who looks at the back of your rings? Plus you can get the white gold dipped in rhodium to get white again. I'd say go with white gold and have a bigger diamond or a more intricate setting.
i vote for platinum. white gold can turn yellow with time, as all gold is truly yellow. platinum is a naturally white metal. platinum may scratch, but it doesn't lose any metal. you take it back to the jeweler and they can polish it like new.
ITA.. also because for some reason my body turns white gold back to yellow..
I'd always thought I would want my ring in platinum, but my FH was convinced by the JEWELER to go with white gold and I honestly couldn't be happier.
White gold is super shiny, whereas (to me) platinum always had more of a silver look. I LOVE the way the white gold looks with my stone. Though I will likely have to have it re-rhodiumed down the road (actually, the jeweler said that platinum needs to be re-coated after about 10 years as well) I figure it's a small amount of upkeep for such an important possession.
I had the same issie..plus our jeweler told him with my stone which is a bit on th elarger size...white gold is safer.... Because platinum is so pliable..the stone can loosen more easily over time. I never realized it before but this was confirmed by my parents. My moms ering was originally in platinum and her stone fell out twice....she finally changed it to gold and its been great for the past 15+ years...she said it was the best thing she ever did!

Re: White Gold or Platinum?
Hi,
I had this same problem too when deciding on my Ering. I ended up with platinum. My mom's ering is white gold and it turned yellow. I rather take the risk of scratches(visible) and repolishing then having my ring turn yellow. I'll get paranoid and always looking at it to see if it turns yellow. Good luck (-=

Re: White Gold or Platinum?- update
i prefer the look of platinum also - both of my rings are platinum.....platinum scratches but so does gold - so no matter what you get it will scratch....either way im sure the jewelry will be beautiful! my FH's wedding band is gold - mine is platinum but he got gold b/c it does wear better if you are rough with your hands....

Re: White Gold or Platinum?- update
if you are looking for durability then i would go with the 14k gold... i think the metal is a little bit stronger than the 18k

I vote white gold bc platiunum is a more precious metal and is softer causing it to scratch easier....this is what I was told anyway so I would say white gold.
ITA
Me too! FH wanted to get me platinum but I insisted on white gold.
I have 18k white gold...it has more of the look of platinum than 14k if thats what you're looking for

i vote for white gold. as others have said, i heard platinum scratches easily. yes white gold can yellow but you can re-dip it..in my opinion, you dont need to re-dip it that much so i would save yourself the money since they look the same..no one can tell the difference

If it's an antique style ring, the platinum is a more appropriate metal for your ring, in my opinon.

Re: White Gold or Platinum?- update
white gold has its pros and cons and so does the platinum. There is a new metal called palldium. it is the 'New Platimun' it is a lot stronger then white gold wont turn yellow and not as precious as platinum so it wont look dull or scratchy.
I had a white gold setting and it turned yellow within 9 months. I had to change my setting for other reasons and switched to the palladium and is the best thing i eer did.
Hope this helps!

14K white gold....it is stronger and when it gets not so shiny you can go get it redipped....plat. scratches easier

I say Platinum! It may be heavier, but it's sturdier too. Gold flakes off and is a very soft metal. Especially the higher the concentration of real gold (i.e. 18k or better) It will flake off and you'll have a thinner band over time. Platinum make scratch, but you don't actually lose any of the metal there so it maintains it's integrity. If quality and durability matter to you, go w/Platinum. Of course, I'm biased! LOL.

ITA, and especially in your job that's very hands on, you want to have a ring that won't scratch AS easily
