I got engaged in August and my ring is 18k white gold, after about 2 months I started to notice that the underside of the ring (the outside of it not the inside) had a yellow tinge to it, it got alittle more yellow over the last month, not really noticeable to anyone that doesnt stare at it all day like I do. My fiance and I went to the jeweler on Saturday and showed him and he redipped it in rodium but didnt give us an explanation as to why it was happening so soon. I heard that this does happen but after 3 months? My fiance is on the computer reading posts about how this has happened to alot of girls but I dont think it is that common. Has this happened to you?

Re: White Gold ring turning yellow?
Dont worry this happens a lot. My aunts a jeweler so she explained this to me. The problem is that white gold isnt naturally white. So if you use antibacterial lotions especially, they take off the rhodium from the ring. A lot of cleaning products, and soaps do this as well. Her suggestion was to take off the rings when you do any cleaning, lotioning, basically anything that has to do with the gold coming in contact with what I mentioned above. Hope that helps!

This has not happened to me, but I take my ring off most of the time when washing my hands or cleaning.

Re: White Gold ring turning yellow?
It happened to me. I get mine dipped usually every 3 months to keep it looking shiny . It happens because White Gold is not a natual metal. Its yellow gold made white. Or at least thats what the jewler told me lol,

This is exactly what they told me. It is normal and I began to take the precautions and the ring is just fine!

Re: White Gold ring turning yellow?
My ring is white gold also. So far it has not turned yellow but when I found out this happens I did some research and this is what I found or was told...
There is no such thing as white gold. All gold in naturally yellow. In order to make it white they put a different alloy in it, however it will still take on a faint yellow look to it before polishing. What jewelers do is rhodium plate the ring to make it bright white. Rhodium is part of the platinum family, so it can withstand everyday wear and tear pretty well. All white gold is rhodium plated no matter where you bought it.
The inside of your ring will turn yellow quicker because the acids in your skin are causing the rhodium to wear faster. Certain ppls skin types will cause the rhodium to wear faster than others. If you ever notice the outside turning yellow take it to your jeweler so it can be dipped, meaning to re-rhodium it.
To avoid it turning yellow faster keep harsh chemicals away from your ring. Dont clean with your ring on. When cleaning your ring its best to take it to your jeweler or use very hot water with a little dish soap.
I tried the dishsoap and hot water and my ring came out sparkling!

Re: White Gold ring turning yellow?
White gold actually doesn't exist. It's yellow gold and dipped in rhodium to make it look silvery. Rhodium wears away after awhile, but the fix is easy. Almost any jeweler can clean and re-dip your ring for you. I haven't noticed any yellowing on my rings, but when I had it cleaned right before the wedding, our jeweler dipped it as well, just in case.

Re: White Gold ring turning yellow?
I just had this problem also. I noticed it a little bit before I got married but it looked really noticeable when I had my new wedding band next to my E-ring. DH took my ring to the jeweler and was told the same thing as everyone above said. He was told it usually happens after about 6 months. They dipped it and now it looks great - but I guess its something I'll ahve to do pretty regularly.

Re: White Gold ring turning yellow?
it's happening to me. And unfortunately it will continue to happen, I would say the more pure your gold is the sooner it will happen. Its kind of the same with yellow gold you'll notice 24k which is closed to pure gold is more yellow almost orange as in comparison to 10k gold.

When you bring the ring to get cleaned from the jeweler your FH picked it out at, they can buff it out for you and it will be white again.
