Why do most people put 'honour' instead of honor on the invitation?

The woman at the store said that it is the British way for wording an invite, but it seems that it is more common here to use honour instead of honor.

The proper spelling to use on a wedding invitation is HONOUR, it is the formal and traditional spelling. Also, the words have slightly different meanings.

For example:

HONOR
You are cordially invited to attend
a Retirement Party
in honor of Bob Johnson

HONOUR
Mr. and Mrs Robert Johnson
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter

If you don't want to use the spelling of the word correctly, then it would be better to use *different* wording on your invitations ....

I think Honour is used more in religious ceremonies...and honor is used for a marriage ceremony

ETA: and if you use Honour...your response card The FAVOUR should be spelled the same way->that is of course if you use that wording on your response

Favour-Honour
Honor-Favor

I dont know why but thats what I was told
