So I was not planning on inviting my sisters brother in-law and his wife to the wedding, but she told me your supposed to. Is that something customary? I want to keep my list as small as possible.

i was forced to invite FH's brothers' wive's entire families (their siblings, parents, and even grandparents) .... i really didn't want to but FMIL made me do it.
ultimately you don't NEED to but if it'll prevent drama, you prob should.

Preventing drama is exactly what I'm all about! Hopefully I won't have to do too many things I dont want to, just to prevent drama!

I'm having a similar problem. My father's side is insiting on inviting EVERYONE....they even have people on the list whos last name they don't know!!!! The list is growing and growing and worst part is....FH and I ARE PAYING!
Sometimes you just need to put your foot down....i still have time but i'm at the point where i'm going to blow up.
IMO there is no 'rule' on who to invite, if your close to the people then invite them, if not..don't!

FH and I went through the same problem. He wanted to invite tons of people, that I have never met. I had to stop the madness. He kept talking about hurting people's feelings. Eventually, after a lot of talking to each other about it, he began to realize he could not worry about that. There are still a few people on the list, that I wish had not been, but our list is still small, so it's ok. It got to a point where I just said, what's one more?

I think that is totally up to you.
I am still on the edge about inviting my brother's IL's which would be another 6 people. He told me it's not necessary but I just sorta feel bad not inviting them.

ye my FMIL wants one of her sons gf's entire family invited bec she knows them. it is what it is lol i didnt fight it.

I would say no. This is YOUR wedding. If you are not close with them, then it is not necessary.

That is what I am doing. Out of respect I am inviting my siblings' MIL and FIL, but not the brothers and sisters. Unfortunately, you have to draw a line somewhere.
