Who gets invited to the bridal shower ?

Do you invite out of town guests to the shower if you know they won`t be able to come? My mother doesn`t want to invite certain people because she thinks they`ll feel obligated to send a gift even though they can`t make it, but I thought they would be offended if they weren`t extended the invitation. What are you guys doing?

I would think the girls from both the girl's side & FI's side & then friend's of the bride-to-be...
Only 1 of my mom's friend's & her daughter are going to be invited (even tho they live upstate) because she invited us to hers.

hmmmm, even the women who are on the grooms list that don't know the bride?
also, what about the wife of one of the groomsmen? no one has answered yet about the far away guest who we know won't make it, is it a courtesy or is it asking for a gift???

Invited all women family and friends, in my family and my Fi's if they feel they want to send a gift they will, if they don't they don't.

Anyone who knew the bride or groom well was, but I don't think people like my father's boss's wife was invited..

It really depends. If you are having a huge wedding, then inviting every female who is invited to the wedding is a bit much. I went to a shower once that was thrown by the FMIL and the bride knew her bridal party and that was it! Very uncomfortable day. I'm going to invite the relatives I am close with, friends, and relatives of Keith's that I am close with or would be close with if we lived in the same state (like his aunts).

As for the out of towners, I wold invite them anyway. Some people may want to come. I have driven several hours on a few occassions for a shower (and am doing it again on Memorial Day). Your effort to be polite and not seem to be begging for gifts will backfire if you offend people by not inviting them! Invite them. If they come, they come. If they send a gift, they send a gift. Let it be their decision. Maybe you can leave the registry cards out of the out of towners invites. That way the gift issue wont come up unless they contact someone to find out where you registered.
