What I am going to do is have the DJ do a 'hot potato' type game with a $1. The first time it lands on someone, they are now the bartender for the table for the night . Then you do it again and poeple aren't wanting the $1 to land on them, and they get the centerpiece! It was a lot of fun when I played it at a wedding, so that is what I am going to do.
Am I slow b/c i dont get it?
To help decide who takes home the centerpiece they play a game. but to add a little wtwist to it, first you decide who is going to be the tables bartender for the night. (if you want a drink, you make the 'bartender' go to the bar for you)

It is so much fun! In the beginning of the game everyone wants to win, but then you end up being the bartender, so the next time around, you don't want to win, and you get the centerpiece!

Re: who gets the centerpiece - any ideas
I want to have certain people take the centerpiece home too, so I'm cheating a little bit and having the person at the table who has known the bride or groom the longest winning the centerpiece. That way I know my Mom and my FMIL will get the ones from their table and my childhood friend the one from her table.

Re: who gets the centerpiece - any ideas
I've been to weddings/baptisms where the person whose birthday is closest to the wedding date gets the CP; and at another it was the person who had the most keys on his/her keychain got the CP; i remember about 10 or 15 years ago it was common to put a piece of paper under a plate and that person would get the CP
at the most recent weddings/baptisms i've been to, there were no games, and it was just decided by the folks at each table who would get the CP (although the $1 with thebartender sounds like fun)
