Who has a wireless network at home?

Who has a wireless network at home?

How well does it work, what is your setup like? Currently I have 2 desktops in a linksys wired router, but I just want to add a wireless connection for a laptop to that. I bought the Apple Airport Dock, but it cost about a quadrillion dollars...so I might send it back. My friend got a much cheaper one but says it doens't work well. What equipment do you have? How well does it work? Range, speed, etc?

I have one and I don't know the name of the equipment off hand. I'll check at home. I work on the PC and my DH works upstairs on his laptop usually. Haven't tested the range other than around the house but it's just as fast as the PC. I hope that helps.

Thanks. If there's something cheaper out there that works well, I'd rather get that. The airport thing is so expenive.

We do. DH bought the part to set it up, which was around $100.

Does it work well? The Airport Extreme Dock I bought was $180 with a student discount. It'll be plugged into my existing wired router (I don't want to spend the $$ to make my PCs wireless, there's no point) and just transmit so I can use my laptop. I just feel like $180 is a lot lot lot to spend

Mine works really well. I'm not sure of the name of it, but I can tell you tonight.

Thanks so much, I'd appreciate it. I've heard the apple one I ordered works very well, but for $180 it better work well and be made of gold

I have a lynksys...my PC is hard wired and my lap-top is wireless. They both work well and speedy. I think the wireless card with router package was about $100 at best buy.

I think that's what we have! Definitely. It had a rebate too when we bought it so it was a little less.

Is it G wireless or B wireless?

Also Lynksys here ... and no problems whatsoever.

I have two network PC Cards too because when we got the router, neither of our PC's had internal cards. Of course, after we spent the $$$$, our laptops (from work) were upgraded.

I was looking at this fancy shamncy link sys to replace my crrent rotuer entirely b/c t has wired and wireless and it's a wide are G wireless one. The only upside to the apple one is I just realized it's covered under my extended warranty from apple, so that may be a big plus. I'm so confused. FH was no help whatsoever!

i have a linksys setup as well (wireless desktop and laptop) and my connection periodically drops, have yet to troubleshoot it, but it is quite annoying...

B wireless is all you need. Anything faster is a real waste unless you do a ton of file transfers BETWEEN PCs (not the internet).

You can get a B wireless router for under $40 buks online very easily.

Apple airport is a waste.

how do you go about troubleshooting a connection that drops?

Does your computer actually tell you that the 'wireless network is no longer available'.

If thats the case... you may be getting interference from something (like a cordless phone). Try powering the cordless appliances off and see if that helps.

Very difficult to troubleshoot that because 2.4 cordless phones run on the same frequency as wi-fi.

And if your neighbor has a cordless phone that you have no control over... good luck with that one.

If you still have an actual wireless connection... but lose your internet access... thats another issue.

B is slow and you can buy G for 40-50 bucks now. Heck, if G is a tad laggy but then again, i enjoy my bandwidth

XP by default 'should' tell you if you are in range, etc... not sure about the apple as i don't own one.

link to 40 linksys router after rebate with G

Re: Who has a wireless network at home?

The main thing I'm concerned about is range. I want to be able to use it throughout the house, and my house has a lot of thick walls, etc, and it's not a big house, but it's a long house. Front to back is about 100 feet, and the router will be at the very back of the house. Is there really no noticeable difference betwen B and G? I've never even used a wireless connection before. The laptop has an Airport Extreme card built in, and i'm pretty sure it'll work on any standard w i fi conneciton, but the they told me not all routers work well with Mac, so I'm concerned. I'm really totally clueless about wireless.

Tyanks Thom, you're always a wealth of info (and good deals) But I'm concerned about range. I know some of the less expensive rotuers only work 50 feet, whereas the ones that are $100+ say they work 150 feet. I think I'd need the 150 foot range.
