Cant say I have money to put down on one, but I've been looking in Nassau County. Some of them are pretty reasonable but the inside of them look like they might need to be changed (esp the kitchens). Wouldnt it be so nice to have money to buy a house???? Im thinking in 10 years lol. Seriously thats when I'll have enough saved!

Re: Who has been house shopping?
FH and I are playing around with the idea of WHERE we are going to live once we get married next year... we are thinking an apt.. we will get it on January 1st.. he can move in first then me! We would LOOOOVE to go right into a house at that point.. but he is looking for a job in the education field.. so we don't really know what his income will be yet... (it's a hard field) and we don't want to use his income and location now... because I don't know where he will be next year... then we were also thinking... it would be alot to move into a HOUSE on JAN 1st.........and then wedding in MArch!!!!! so we are thinking a 1 yr lease on an apt... 2009... then 2010 a house.. unless things change !

I browse MLSLI on occasion even though we won't be able to buy for a while. It's the taxes that are the real problem, they're ridiculous in Nassau.

I heard that also....they're what like 9K a year? And I heard another thing that there's mortgage insurance that the brokers and realtors dont tell you about. A couple we know put a bid on a house in Massapequa for 400K and the mortgage ended up coming out to 4,000 a month. I was like why??? They told me mortgage insurance Donna, they dont tell you that part!!

Re: Who has been house shopping?
FH and i are hoping to buy a house or condo a few years after the wedding, we have $ saved now, but would like to use the $ we get from the wedding as part of the downpayment as well.

Re: Who has been house shopping?
That will definately work. I know alot of people take their wedding money and put it in CD's etc so it gains interest.

Re: Who has been house shopping?
I look on msli a lot but right now it's just a dream. I say I want to go to open houses just to see but I think that would further disappoint me since actually buying a house wont come until probably a year after the wedding. Our apartment that we live in right now basically is like a house... dining room, decent sided kitchen, two floors but I want to OWN something! Oh, to have a lot of money...

Re: Who has been house shopping?
we were for the past year or so, but realizing after his dads surgery that its hard for his parents to maintain the house and (hes 71) take care of it, we decided to renovate it, and pay off the mortgage, Then once we know they are set we are hoping to move out of NY withthem, and just...take things easy lol

Are a lot of you considering moving out of NY? My sister and her husband had a house built right outside of Charlotte, NC. It's insane - five bedrooms, HUGE kitchen, three bathrooms, a bonus room.... and really reasonable but to me, it's just not NY! I dont think I'd be able to do it.

Yeah its called PMI and you only have to pay it if you put under a certain amount down on a house...im not sure what percentage of the selling price you have to put down to avoid it. its either 10% or 20% possibly???

Re: Who has been house shopping?
To avoid PMI you need to put down 20% of the selling price. So, unless have ~$100,000 sitting in the bank your in trouble...I'm in the same boat right now.

Re: Who has been house shopping?
This topic depresses me! Housing prices are so ridiculous STILL. We were trying to look for some open houses this weekend but didn't see anything we are interested in looking at until tomorrow..
Good luck everyone!

Re: Who has been house shopping?
We're going to start looking after I finish all my treatments.
We have the down payment stashed away, now it's just going to be a matter of finding a mortgage that we can afford. That's why we're hell-bent on keeping the wedding extremely small....enough to celebrate a joyous ocassion, but nothing that's going to break the bank.

it has to be 20% down, however, as soon as you have 20% of your mortgage paid, you no longer have to pay PMI...the PMI is 150 a month

Re: Who has been house shopping?
We just bought a co-op! They are a lot less expensive then a house, but we hope to be able to buy a house around 3 years depending how the housing market is.

We were living down in MD after I graduated from school down there, but my whole family is here and I just missed NY and always knew I wanted to start a family here, so we moved back up here.
