Fh wants to get it. How does it work? Do it get hooked up to the TV like the dvd/vcr player? Can you watch one show and tivo something else? Anyone know how much it costs? Thanks.

Re: Who has Tivo...
We just got it, so we're still learning how it works exactly.
Its hooks up to the cable box and phone line.
There are different levels you can purchase - ours was $250 and a monthly fee ($12, I think).
I don't think you can Tivo one thing and be watching another, but I'm not sure.
you can get all your questions answered here: Tivo

What a nice FW you are...I won't let FH get it!
We decided to hold off because I've heard it's rather pricey and hopefully in the near future the cable companies will start selling hard drives and similar services...

I didn't say he WAS getting it...I said he wants it. I was reading the website that was posted above...he's NOT getting it at this point. I already pay $100 for cable every month...and now I have to pay more so he can watch the same tv??? I was just researching.....research over...

Im sure we are getting it very soon. My DH has been going on about how good it is.
it is GREAT!!! I bought it for DH for xmas - but I use it much more that he does...
the only flaw is that you cannot record one program and watch a different one...

Re: Who has Tivo...
TiVo is the greatest invention ever made!
Once you get it you will never watch TV the same way. I love the fact about never worrying about setting the VCR or making sure I put a fresh tape in. Our having the tapes pile up bc I don't have time to watch stuff.
I don't watch live TV anymore. Even if I am home when Friends is on, I will record it and watch something that is already saved on TiVo. May not be a good thing, but you watch more TV in less time bc you can FWD the commercials. I also like the fact that you can pause live TV for up to 30 min if the phone rings or if you have to go the bathroom.
I got an 80-hr TiVo with lifetime subscription from Ebay and saved $80. Then a few weeks later I got a free one from work bc TiVo is our client. It's great bc FH and I can record our own stuff.
I would wait a couple of months bc TiVo is coming out with a 120 or 140 hr box that will be the same price at the 80hr.
FM if you have any more questions.

Actually you can, you have to put TiVo on Standby (In menu, Settings - -> Standby) then you can change channels with TV remote. To go back to TiVo, put TV back to channel 3/4 and press Live TV.

We were supposed to go to Long Island tonight (we live in NYC), but my FH forgot to tape Survivor and AI...so we can't...he said 'if only we had TIVO'
Do you think he did that on purpose?
Anyway - we are moving in about a month - we'll probably get it then.
I have to admit - I can't wait!!!!

Re: Who has Tivo...
i just got it. it was my b-day present. i love it. the major drawback is not being able to watch one thing and record another. however, you can watch something that's already been recorded while it is recording something new. but it does not completely elminate the need for a vcr if there's a lot of shows you like. for instance tonight it will tape survivor, but won't catch that 70's show and american idol so i'll still have to tape those.
anyway, i highly recommend it. it's fun too b/c tivo finds you programs you didn't even know were on. for instance i put in that i want it to tape all figure skating, so now i don't have to figure out when it's on tivo will just tape it.

Re: Who has Tivo...
I got it for DH birthday back in Sept.....WE LOVE IT. We loved Direct TV before we got it, but now life is grand.....if we miss something, it's on TiVo if we programmed it to tape.....otherwise we can check to see when it's showing again....
ETA: with the satellite...you have 2 lines so you can tape one, watch another (or tape 2 at once)....but more than 2 at the same time is impossible....I tried the other night to watch Average Joe ADam Returns, but I oculdn't cuz one line had WWE RAW taping and the other line had American Chopper taping....
it is GREAT!!! I bought it for DH for xmas - but I use it much more that he does...

thanks!!! I am going to try it...
we have the 40 hour TiVo...and I sometimes wish that we had the 80...b/c we only tape at medium level out of fear of running out of space...

I think you can now watch one thing and record another. Not sure exactly what needs to be done but my friend just had hers upgraded so she can do it!
We have the DVR thing from Time Warner. It's exactly like Tivo but through the cable company. It's awesome! We never watch live tv anymore!!

Re: Who has Tivo...
We have Tivo and we love it! You can watch tv and have tivo record at the same time. you just have to watch it through your tv or cable box rather than through the tivo. i just have to press the input button on my remote to switch back to regular tv. i think it's pretty much the same way you would with a vcr.
eta: we don't have any upgrades. we've had tivo for about 2 years and we've always been able to watch & record at same timeb

hey steph...I couldn't get this to work...DH says that we need a splitter? do you have one?
