Is anyone doing this? Where do you get them from?

I believe I am; my mom still has hers from when she got married. My grandma gave it to her to put in her shoe.

So as long as my mom can find it, I am going to do it.

Possibly start a tradition in the family and pass it down to my daughters one day.

Thanks!

You can always start a new tradition to pass on down within your family...a tradition has to start somewhere!

I would do it; if you google sixpence you get all sorts of stuff.

Since my sis got married at Disney, they have a DIsboard forums for brides.

It's really cute what they do...for her wedding they sent her a card and sixpence (too bad it was sent to NY and we were already in FL), but after the wedding, she sent it to the next bride to use on their wedding! I thought that it was too cute!

I did...my MOH actaully did it for me. Your supposed to find a penny from the year you were born and put it in your shoe. BUT, since I was married on the beach, we drilled a hole in it and tied it around my ankle. I was barefoot.

I also wore it again the day we had our ceremony back here too

Re: Who is dong a sixpence???

Some History!!! I came across this as I was looking into the sixpence!!!!

The tradition of the Sixpence Coin
We've heard many stories of the tradition behind the sixpence coin. But most ignore the basic fact that the general population of England were poor farmers who toiled the land for their 'Lord of the Manor.' As a result, back in the mid 16th century in England, it was rare for the general population to afford a wedding band made of any kind of precious metal. At that time, the British sixpence coin was the lowest value coin that contained silver, so many a groom took such a coin and had it melted or hammered into an affordable ring for his bride. From such a humble beginning, a couple's wealth was sure to only rise, hence the sixpence coin became associated during the hope for the future rise in a couple's wealth, and the tradition of the sixpence was born.

From one generation to the next, a sixpence 'ring', and later the unaltered coin itself would be included as part of the dowry gift to the groom. The tradition especially grew in popularity during the reign of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) — who's own wedding spawned many of today's wedding traditions.

Given to a bride by the father to include in his daughter's left shoe during the wedding, (just like a ring is placed on the left hand, closest to the heart) it is said to bring the newlywed couple health, wealth and happiness.

Great Brittan stopped minting sixpence coins in 1980 and they have become increasingly hard to find.

Oh here is another....

According to tradition, during the early 1600s, the Lord of the Manor would present a sixpence to the bride as a wedding gift. Toward the end of the seventeenth century, it became customary for the bride’s parents to include a lucky sixpence as part of the dowry gift to the groom.

As time went on, the custom of using the sixpence as part of the bride’s attire developed. In Victorian England, the traditional lucky wedding sixpence was given to the bride by her father just before her wedding. He would place the coin into his daughter’s left slipper for good luck. Even today it is said that the lucky sixpence, worn in the bride’s left shoe during the wedding, brings the newlywed couple a lifetime of good health, happiness, wealth and happy wedded bliss.

Something Old - Signifies a sense of continuity and tradition and represents a link to the bride’s family and the past. Many brides choose to wear a piece of antique family jewelry or a mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress on their wedding day.

Something New - Signifies the couple’s new beginning, a new life together as well as their hope for good fortune and success in the future. The wedding gown is often chosen as the new item.

Something Borrowed - To remind the bride that friends and family will be there for her when help is needed. The object should be borrowed from a happily married friend or family member. This comes with a wish that your married life will mirror the happiness in their marriage. Brides can borrow jewelry, a lace handkerchief or even part of the wedding attire.

Something Blue - Blue represents fidelity, love, loyalty and purity. Often the blue item is the garter.

And a Sixpence in Her Shoe - Signifies both financial wealth and a wealth of happiness and joy.

I didn't get the official sixpence, but found a penny with my birth year on it and thought I'd put that in my shoe. Will this count? LOL

Yes. It did say that sometimes the sixpence is substituted for a penny if you can't find one. I found some web sites that sell them. I bought one. Since it's for wealth and all that... I figure it can't hurt to have!! haha!! I need all the help I can get!!!

So cute!! I just ordered this too!! haha I'm a nut and ordered 2 of them from 2 different sites. I got one for the year my grandmother was born. 1925. Which I have a thing for the number 5... so that's 5 5's which is perfect!! haha! And the other I think they select. One of them came with a little satin cover to put it in so it's comfortable in your shoe all day and the other came with this cute card thing (that I figured I could use for my shadow box later on).
