Who should walk me down the aisle?

Who should walk me down the aisle?

I really want my best friend ( a male) and my father to walk me down the aisle... would it be appropriate for both of them to do it at the same time or my best friend walks me half way to my father and my father walks me the rest of the way to my FH???

Father only...it is usually something that he waits a life time to do...he thinks about it from the day you are born.......

I agree....

Even though best friends are extremely important, I am not sure if its their place to walk you down the aisle... there are so many roles for best friends - I mean, the whole wedding party is designed just for that reason, if you think about it!

It is usually the father's role to 'give' his daughter.

I agree. I think your father should be the one to walk you down the aisle. It's different for ladies who have situations where their father is not in the picture, but since you are lucky enough to have him, why not give the special priviledge to him???

I agree, Dad only. If you had both, it would be like saying that your BF is just as important as your Dad. No matter what's transpired between you and the BF, your Dad created you and gave you life.

Can your best friend be the Best Man? Or can you have him do a reading and make a speech at the reception, to make it more special for him? There are a lot of ways to honor him.

Please, Let your Dad walk you. I just lost my Father and I give anything to have him back.

My father will walk me, but he hasn't been a part of my life until recently. It is my best friend who has been there for me for most of my life. While I have forgiven my father for his mistakes I do feel that it is my best friend who is entitled to this honor just as much if not more so than my father. What do you think in the best way to coordinate this for the day of?

IMO it's your day and you do whatever makes you happy
If you are not close with your Father and think that your best friend deserves the honor then do that. Or if you want them both to be a part of it, maybe have either of them walk you down and dance with the other one or have one walk you down and the other give you away?

I think you should have both of them. I have the same relationship with my father and he is not walking me down. Just my sister. The reason why I am not having my father and my sister is because my uncle who also has been there for me my whole life has more of right than my father. So I have my dad and uncle escorting my aunt.

So in your case I would have them both, and he should be grateful you are giving him this honor considering the past.

In that case, I would say have your best friend walk you half way and then your father walk you the rest.

IMO, not all fathers are created equal and if he's a recent addition to you life, then he probably doesn't deserve the honor of walking you. He can be invited and do a reading or give a toast, but the honor of giving you away should go to the person who was your rock - a person who was there for you throughout your life... but I don't know your situation so I would say do what you feel comfortable with. As long as the arrangement makes sense to you, then that's all that really matters.

OK well since your dad just recently became a part of your life I would let your mother walk you. I would honor the best friend another way.

I read the subject and thought 'whoever you want'.

After reading the entire question and the options - my answer is still the same - whoever you want!

It should only be your father! I don't think a friend should be walking you down no matter how close you are. Think about it - a friend 'giving you away'??? Doesn't really work Just my opinion

Then have your mom walk you down

I like the idea of your Best Friend walking you halfway and then having your fathr walk you the rest of the half. This to me would symbolize your BF guiding you down your path until your father was prepared to help you with your way.

I am a firm believer in doing what you feel in your heart is right and not just doing what is traditional. I also don't like the thought of being 'given away'. The tradition was started when woman didn't have a choice about whom they were going to marry and were basically treated as property with which the head of the house bargined. I understand that it is traditional, but you give yourself away and if you want a man in a Santa suit to walk with you while you are doing it then that's want you should have.

My father and I are closer than we've ever been now (since I moved to NY) and while a huge part of me still wants to walk alone, I am giving him the honor almost as a peace offering...and it means so much to him. I had another male relative in mind when I was growing up, but now that we are close again, I just couldn't let anyone else do it.

On that note, why not have one on each side, the whole way?

Re: Who should walk me down the aisle?

It should be your dad...but you could so something like my SIL did. She and my DH lost their father almost 8 years ago, last year when she got married, she caused a HUGE stir b/c she wanted her friends of her, a male-male couple to walk her down the aisle. My DH was hurt b/c he thought HE would walk her down the aisle since their father had passed away. So, she had Wil and Kevin walk her to DH (in a church it would be to the last row of pews) and then DH walked her down to her new husband. It was meaningful to everyone!

Re: Who should walk me down the aisle?

I think is the most special honor for a father to give his daughter away. I think it is a moment that most fathers look forward to and dread at the same time all his daugher's life. I think of my own dad and the thought of taking that away from him or share something so incredibly special with someone else brings tears to my eyes. I think your dad (if anything like my dad) may be extremely disappointed and may not express his true feelings on the subject if you were to ask him or even propose the idea. (I obviously have an extremely tight bond with my father).

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Only you can decide what is the right thing to do for you.
