Who wants to play doctor w/me?

Who wants to play doctor w/me?

OK some of you probably remember that I posted about a gastroenterologist. I did get an appointment, but it's not for 2 weeks and I'm getting antsy. Anyone every experience anything like what I'm about to describe?

OK, well for a few months now this has been going on. I constantly feel like discomfort in my esophagus. Like I need to burp to clear it, as if it is full around my chest area. So I'm burping a lot and I've never really been a belcher EVER before. And sometimes stuff comes back up like acid reflux type of thing but it is not at all acidy. And also I just have like a fullness sensation in my throat a lot. And sometimes it feels like breathing through my nose irritates it. I am doing a bad job describing it - but it just a bizarre sensation.

Originally I wasn't sure if it was a gastro problem or an ear/nose/throat. I went to an ENT and he looked and said everything looked good. He even ordered a barium swallow xray, which was also normal. The only thing he didn't do was look down my throat with a scope/order an endoscopy. Also he tested for h. pylori and it was negative.

To be honest sounds like acid reflux. I know some people who only get the feeling sometimes but others who have it constantly.

The doctor may want to do the scope to see what is really going on but I do get that feeling more then burning when I have indigestion so I completely feel for you because it is a horrible feeling.

Hope they can give you something to clear it up!

What is protonix?

Pantoprazole (protonix) is in a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Pantoprazole is used to treat erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excess stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Oh, I'm already taking a PPI. I'm taking Prilosec x2 per day. Any idea how long before it should really work to make me feel 100%?

PPI's normally take up to 2 weeks before you start to notice results. It takes some time for it to shut down those proton pumps

If you've already been on a PPI for some time and still don't see results, I'd maybe speak to the doctor about possibly adding a prokinetic agent, like Reglan or Zelnorm...which tightens your esophogeal sphincter.

You're welcome! thanks for the congrats about the baby!

Sorry to crash, but I know EXACTLY what you are talking about! My family has a history of hiatal hernia and it sounds exactly like what you are describing. I get it all the time and so does my sister, mom and grandma. Its like a mix of acid reflux and a rock sitting in your esophagus when I get it. Here is a website with some more info on it in case you wanted to take a look.

This really does sound like what I have, but would it have showed up on the barium xray?

Im really not sure, but since you are going to the gastro anyway, it will show up on the endoscopy, which is how our entire family found ours. I hope you figure out whats going on!

Thanks so much!!! So, how do you get control of it? Have any of you had the laproscopic surgery that the link you sent me mentions?

ETA: Everything I'm ready sort of sounds like the barium x-ray would have exposed the hernia. The doctor who read it actually said to me 'there is nothing wrong structurally.' But, all the symptoms of HH sound like exactly what I'm going through. I hope my doc orders an endoscopy.

Any idea how long it takes to schedule one?

I just take the proton pump inhibitors to stop the acid reflux. I take omeperazole (prilosec) and it works really well. My symptoms kind of come and go, its not bad all the time. My mom actually considered the surgery because she has problems all the time and they have been keeping her from sleeping and when she does sleep she has to sleep sitting up. But she hates surgery and doctors so she's just dealing.

I also don't know how long it takes to schedule and endoscopy, I think it depends on whether your doc does it in the office or the hospital where they are affiliated.
Good luck!!

Not sure if you saw what I said earlier, but I had a barium xray done already and it showed nothing. Is it possible to have a heital hernia and have it not show up on that?
