sad but true, his mom was mad... his dad laughed, and my family was like,'oh really' after 7 years of dating I expected more happiness from them. But we have made our own happiness!

Re: who was the least excited about your engagement?

miro - ain't that the truth! I had a more than a few friends who weren't that thrilled to hear my news....but that's life. I think they were just jealous too, but what can you do?
I also know that my cousin (who had just gotten engaged two months before me) was not very happy that she wasn't the *only* bride in the family that year. It was an attention thing I guess.

Re: who was the least excited about your engagement?

Other than jealousy, it could just be complete self-centeredness (is that even a word?). I have a friend who acts like things are ok only if she's in that place in her life too. When I first got engaged, she acted like I was 15 and getting engaged (I was 25)! Now that she and her boyfriend are more serious is it ok that I'm getting married (2 years later)... Sigh

I'd have to say, one of my best friends. Who is one of my bridesmaids. She was the second person I told before my family and she got very upset.

Re: who was the least excited about your engagement?

I have two. FIrst his mother. His mom just doesn't want to let go. He is an only child and she just likes to be a pain in the ***. She is great about it now but the first few days I cried . My next one was a good friend of mine. We lived together a few years ago (with 2 other girls) and have been close since HS. She is the type that is there for you every second when you are unhappy but you NEVER hear from her when you are happy. Still waiting to hear from her, we've been engaged since June 1. PS she is still VERY close to my roommate and avoids me!! You REALLY find out who your friends are when you get engaged!!!!! I'm happy for all you girls:

Re: who was the least excited about your engagement?

My FI's whole family was not that excited when his mom called them to tell them that we got engaged. Most of them said, that is nice but who is she. They had not met me because they do not talk or see alot of his dad's side of the family. Also when we did meet, they did not even mention the engagement. They said 'Oh yeah. I forgot that you got engaged.' Forgot, how could you forget.

Re: HERE IS A TWIST (LONG)

A very good girlfriend (so I thought) of mine told me on a Saturday night that my boyfriend (now husband) was going to give me a ring on Wednesday the whole family was going to Great Adventure and he was going to propose on the very top of the ferris wheel. My boyfriend only told her at the time because he wanted to know if she wanted to come and share in his special day. She so ruined it!!!! Everyone was so upset and there was a line around the corner to beat her a$$ and needless to say I got the ring on Monday instead of Wednesday so it wasn't really a surprise because at this point I was expecting it, if she didn't say anything I wouldn't have had a clue, we were only dating for three weeks so I would of been shocked!!! Well it's two years later and I've been married for a year and I never spoke to that girl again. Talk about jealousy..p.s. She's still single.

Big Surprise...

My husband's mother. He had money hidden away in his room (he lived at home when we 1st got engaged) and when he decided that we should get engaged (and spoke about the possibility with her), she went into his room and 'hid it' in a diffferent spot. When he found a ring that he was interested in buying, he went to get the money and lo and behold, it was gone. He demanded to know where it went and she hedged for nearly an hour, telling him that she only did it because she didn't want him to do something in haste and wanted him to seriously consider his decision. Mind you, we were dating over four years at the time. He got the money and off he went to get the ring. When he got home, she demanded to see it. He showed her and put the ring in a drawer in his room. He came home from work and noticed the ring was gone. He approached her and she was wearing it on the proper engagement ring finger! She had been wearing it all day! She told him 'It's too nice for her, I think I'll keep it!'. He removed it from her hand. It still bothers me that she 'wore' my ring before I did! I was so angry when he told me, I almost wanted him to get a new one (one that wasn't tainted). He moved out shortly after that. That in itself is another drama story.

And this woman wants/expects me to believe that she thinks of me as one of her family? Denied!

Re: Big Surprise...

One of my BF just said 'Oh well I've been calling him your husband for months now' It just irks the hell out of me. I think she felt that since we have our son & that we are living together it doesn't seem to be as exciting. Mind you I got engaged in Ireland & called her from there!!! It still sort of bothers me. Though now she does ask about weddng plans all the time!

Re: who was the least excited about your engagement?

Sadly enough, my sister. Although we are very close (and she adores my future hubby) she had been dating her boyfriend for over 2 years without a mention of marriage. I had been with my guy for 4 months when we started to look at rings. After our engagement, she put the pressure on her guy and they ended up getting engaged a few months later. It still kind of stings a little. Maybe its petty, but since we were are so close, I still wish she had been a little more excited for me... instead, she cried.

Shamee - his mother sounds like a sick, sick woman... it gave me the creeps when I read your post!

Re: who was the least excited about your engagement?

Shamee, that is the worst thing that I have ever heard. I am sorry that she is going to be your FMIL. I hope she doesn't cause you any more trouble. What a manipulative, controlling, nasty thing to do.
