Everything that happened on the island really happened. So when we saw characters die, they did actually die. The Flash sideways was the 'purgatory' part. In the scene were Christian Shephard tells Jack he is dead, he explains it. He said everyone in the church had died either before Jack or after Jack, but since the island was the best time of their lives and the relationships they made there were the strongest, they were in the flash sideways just waiting for everybody else, so they could cross over together.
Hope that Helps! I know, it's a bit confusing!

Haha. I'm still processing also.
I think that the island world was real life and that the sideways world was a 'purgatory'-type place.
After all of these people died (whenever that may have been--some earlier and some later), they came to the sideways world to remember the most important time in their lives before they could 'move on' (to heaven, the next world, etc).

Re: who watches Lost...?
Everything happened. Their plane crashed. They all spent this time with each other. Becoming friends, falling in love. The flash sideways, that we've been seeing this entire season was their 'purgatory'. It was when they'd found their peace, so to speak. They all found each other again and their lives flashed before them and that allowed them to go to heaven.
Jack died on the island, but the rest of the people who were on the island got off the island and lived their lives. They all died at different times, and all slowly made their journey into the next life. Jack was just the last one. For all we know, what Desmond was doing could have been taking place 50 years after their time on the island.
A few questions about the island weren't answered, but the character story was the basis of the show from the start. All of these people were 'Lost' and living miserable lives. They were brought to this island, they all found each other, and sort of saved each other. They gave each other hope. Claire and Kate. Claire and Charlie. Kate and Jack. Jin and Sun resurrected their love on the island. Sawyer and Juliet. When their lives flashed before their eyes, they saw the love in their life and it was the people on the island, and so they were free to move on into the next life. As Christian said 'the most important part of your lives were on the island'. We don't have every question answered, but we do know what happens in the end. They save each other and are joined together eternally. It was really a beautiful ending.

Re: who watches Lost...?
i'm really disappointed that soooo many questions are still unanswered.
i mean, if the stuff on the island actualy happened, then how do they explain people who can't die, and time travel and smoke monsters!?
it makes more sense if you pretend like it was all Jack's imagination ... though if that's the case, it doesn't explain how he saw the plane with Lapidus, Miles, Richard, Kate, Sawyer and Claire take off ... and is this group the SECOND Oceanic 6...?
uch, i hate this show

it's true ... but i think my love for the characters dwindled in Season 6 ... i just didn't really care about them anymore.

Re: who watches Lost...?
I really wished that they answered time travel, polar bears, walt being special? moving the island? ect...
but i guess the show was really about the characters, and what mother said, the light is LIFE, DEATH and REBIRTH..
and what was her other good line?, one question just leads to another...

they answered the 'polar bears' question by saying that the people were experimenting on the bears' reaction to the magnetic effect of the island (i think)

I think when they casted Walt, they kind of didn't expect him to grow up .... they needed the entire 6 years of the show to look like it was taking place over several months ... so Walt was just ignored.
They did hint that Locke was special just like Walt ... but they still didn't tell us how

Seems like Ben, Walt, Michael, etc....still had some redemption of themselves to do (in purgatory or otherwise) before joining the rest that we saw at the end. Make sense that they wouldn't be with the rest of the crowd......

I don't think that Ben felt ready to move on...or that he should be part of that group that was moving on since he spent so much of his life making others miserable.

ITA!!! Although I really did like the ending and all, I felt that in previous seasons Walt seemed like such a major character and of 'importance'. I was kinda expecting him to at least show up in some way in the finale. I get that he got older (hey thats what kids do! lol) but thought they would find some way to bring him into the storyline again

Re: who watches Lost...?
I thought ben didnt go into church bec he wasnt ready to fogive himself for all the wrong he did on the island- the real life-- and accept his life as it was. The make believe life where they all didnt know each other was i guess a 'life' before heaven?? I also read online that they all died at different stages of their life, some when they were old, some on the island and then they all died and came to this 'life' where they didnt know each other and they needed each other to move on to heaven.

Re: who watches Lost...?
I watched the finale last night after FH's birthday party and must have been out of ti because I could have sworn that at the end, the wreckage on the island meant that the plane crashed and that all of them died instantly, and that what happened on the island didn't really happen...
But I did some research because I was so confused and found out everything that you guys are saying.. I was a little disappointed that some questions weren't answered, but like a lot of you said already, the show was really about the characters and the island was merely a backdrop do their lives together...
This website explains some stuff : http://screenrant.com/lost-finale-explanation-kofi-61464/all/1/
Did anyone notice all of the appearances of the number 23 in the show???
