Why are people at the office backstabbers?

I am soooo sick of it. I have worked with these people for years and have been nothing but nice to them. Two women in particular are always talking in the corner and mumbling things under their breathe. Why are people like that?
It makes me sick!!!!!!!

I would venture a guess that they have no lives and are very jealous of yours!

I work in the same type of environment...only it's all the men that form a boys club. They go behind a closed door at least 4 times a day to talk about everyone.

I'm sick of corporate America.

after I became engaged...there were 2 girls (I will not dignify them by calling them woman) who were once so nice to me...started talking about me...with me in the room!! It was so awful...and upsetting...until another co-worker told me that they were probably jealous of the engagement..b/c one had just broken up with a longterm BF...and the other still had not been proposed to

But seriously, maybe they are not even discussing you? They could be talking about something personal - who knows?

I'm guilty of it, because there is a chick here at work that I would love to choke! She's always making every second of the day 'The 360 degrees of....ME'. She's irritating at best.

So yeah, my friend and I talk about her at length because we can't believe someone would be so clueless all the time. I guess it's mean, but it's the only way we remain sane and avoid blowing up all over her.

No I am not. I helped them with so many things. I am in shock that this is the way they treat the people who are good to them. I was explaining that I KNOW for a FACT that they ARE INDEED talking about ME. I wish I could say more but then I will be just like them and that is not who I am. If you were a really good friend to people and they did this to you,you would feel the same.

Of course. But sitting there feeling uncomfortable isn't going to help either. I would confront them, especially if you overheard them say something directly about you. It will embarass them to no end if you approach them on it. What will they say then?

Ok, the WORST place in the world when it comes to gossip is a school. I'm a teacher, but I'm what they call a 'traveling' teacher because we don't have a music room yet, so I go from room to room with all my stuff. You would think the kids are bad, but I am constantly interrupted by the TEACHERS in the room talking about all the other teachers. I've been the target for 5 months now since I am the 'new' one. My first staff meeting....everyone got up and moved to the other side of the room when I sat down! But now I hear it everywhere about everyone. To he11 with all the gossipers.....
(oh, unless you have something juicy to tell me....gossip away then haha)

You could try confronting them and doing it loudly...
confront is not always easy for people.
I still say...kick them in the shins or trip them!!

Oh, believe you me, I said something. I am not afraid of being hated. (and for no reason, puhleez). It's interesting because all the good people are coming out of hiding now As far as I'm concerned, I get paid no matter what they say....so biatch away about me all you want

I think all of us have this problem at our jobs. I have 4 women who make everyone's lives miserable and the worst part about it is all the VP's know about it and don't do a thing about it. I constantly get dirty looks, 50 phonecalls a day to point out that I haven't done something perfect and I have gotten to the point that I hate going to work. My boss knows my situation and every time something happens I go in his office and vent. We make fun of them and I go about my business. It truly is unfortunate that 4 witches can ruin so many people's working day. I just sit back now and laugh at them b/c their lives must be sooooo pathetic that they have to bust my chops and it is nothing but jealousy. You know what.....I'm thinner than you, I'm younger than you, and my FH is hotter than all your husbands so deal with it and get over it!

I had to quit a job because of that. I had a boss who used to let go of the door when I was walking right behind her. It was so unbearable.When I left,I let human resources know what was going on there.
