why are the hospitals so difficult?

why are the hospitals so difficult?

I haven't spoken to anybody from the actual hospital yet, but have read so many posts from you ladies about things that go on in the hospitals after delivery and during.

Like the baby being taken for testing right after birth even if you specify that you want a few minutes to bond (Michele's concern), that even if you demand no formula that mommies have caught the nurse burping the baby - having given a bottle, not clipping or filing the babies nails, etc. I am sure there are tons of others as well. I know the reputation of my hospital is quite good = it's not in LI so I am sure none of you know anything about it, but I can't help but be concerned that with so much else going on during those hours, that there is so much to worry about?! Why don't they abide by your regulations and requests? Why do mommy and daddy have to be so concerned that their directions aren't being followed?

Alot of it is just CYA type crap...hospitals don't want to get slapped with malpractice lawsuits, etc.

But, another part of it is ignorance or even laziness on the part of the staff.

I gave birth at Stanford University's Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in California, and it is a *very* highly rated and respected establishment on a national scale. HOWEVER, I still had plenty of complaints in the treatment I received during my stay, and how the nursing staff handled my baby. Some of the nurses were less than gentle with my precious newborn

It is horrible that they don't follow your wishes. I'm going on my hospital tour on Wednesday night, so I'm hoping to find all this out.

Jenny
My concerns went up this weekend over 'our hospital'
I went last week for a procedure and everyone was really nice--

but then Fri night I saw a friend of a friend(the one I told you that was going to start working in L&D part time) well she did and only stayed one day--she didnt' like the nurses at all--

so at first I was kind of upset but the more I talked to her it all worked out-- she said since they are union nurses they really stick together and take care of their own(sounds strange huh) but since they take alot of their nurses from their own school I guess it makes sense!!!

but what she did say that the number of nurses to patients was amazing--didn't even compare to other hospitals--

Can't wait for your experience so I know what I am in for!!!!
