why did i get married in 06??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm estimating our income tax return, since i have the day off.
if we were still single, we'd get a nice refund. since we're married, we're getting $98... yes, that's it!
i love my husband, but i wish i was single right now

i used to work for h&r block. it doesn't help to file separately.
ideally, you want to 'break even' with uncle sam. but being that we could use every penny for our new house, it just sux right now.
i'm not going to lie and pretend to be single, so i'm just going to have to su ck it up.
oh, well

legally, if you're married, you have to file jointly. our refund will go towards bills.

We continued to claim single 0 on our weekly checks and we filed jointly this year (you have to by law if you're married and share the same last name)...with that said, we're getting a nice chunk back...all towards the house fund...

We filed married-separate.
There were some benefits but be aware that you could get dinged.
The child and dependent care credit, adoption expense credit, and Hope and Lifetime learning credits are only available to a married couple filing a joint return.
You can't take the credit for the elderly or the disabled if you file separate returns unless you and your spouse lived apart for the entire year.
You cannot deduct qualified education loan interest unless a joint return is filed.
You may not be able to deduct contributions to your IRA if either you or your spouse was covered by an employer's retirement plan and you file separate returns.
A Roth IRA contribution or conversion is virtually out of the question.
You cannot exclude adoption assistance payments or any interest income from series EE savings bonds that you used for higher education expenses if you file separate returns.
Social Security benefits are, in some instances, more heavily taxed for a couple filing separately.

I feel your pain but at least you do not have a balance due.

That stinks! We filed jointly this year and are getting about $1K less than last year b/c we are in a higher tax bracket. Make sure you consider anything you can write off. We were able to write off all the sales tax we paid for the wedding, 2 new cars we bought and other major purchases. So in that sense, it wasn't so bad getting married. Ask me again next year though!

my mom, who does our taxes, told me this. but i realize its wrong. we could have filed seperatly, but financially, it would not have made sense.

you need to have at least 10k to write off. its not as easy as saying we wrote off the sales tax.
