why do some vendors ask for cash in full at the affair?
like, for example, my band is making me pay in cash at the wedding...
does this mean their services are 'off the books?' and why are we paying taxes on it then?

Maybe or they prefer cash instead of check because it's more convenience for them.
Why do you have pay tax? As I know, I don't pay tax for dj and limo. I don't know about band, but I think it'll be the same.

Most vendors actually don't accept any other method of payment for the final payment other than cash.
I'm sure they wouldn't want a check to bounce or a credit card to be declined.
I also would ask that if they require 100% in cash, not to be charged tax...most especially bands/DJ's/etc.

Because believe it or not, there have been more than a few brides and grooms who have paid by check, gone on their HM and had their checks bounce!
If you feel uncomfortable abut cash, pay with a certified check.

If they are charging you tax with a cash payment I would pay them with a certified/bank check.

I think they want cash so that you can't cancel the check. We met with our hall last night and they only want cash of certified check. He made it sound like some people have charged it or written a personal check and then disputed the charges or stopped payment on a check. But I hate paying in cash also!

if it makes you feel better, pre-pay it before your wedding with a personal check.

cash = payment...
you 'can' write a check and it will bounce.. tracking down money after service has already been given is hard to do and nobody wants to deal with that.
but in turn, its kinda unfair cause you can pay em, and they do a bad job and didnt follow your instructions and they are overpaid...

Im thinking they can because if you purchase something in a store they have to charge tax regardless of how you pay. I think the reason some dont is because they rather avoid the fee to the credit card co. and they dont have to report an accurate earnings figure, which means less taxes to pay for them.
My florist didnt even accept credit cards and he said if I paid with cash hed have to charge me tax also.

there are no taxes on dj's and bands (or musicians in general) the only thing they can tax you on is if you got extras- like give aways or special lighting.

Almost all of our vendors require cash for the final payment. The only exception being our florist, but he said if we pay in cash then we don't have to pay sales tax. So far the only ones charging us tax are the hall and our photographer.

I don't think it's uncommon to have to pay the final payment in cash. What I do find strange is that your band is charging you tax. Sean, from Code Bleu told me in NY state, bands can't charge tax. I would look into that.

Re: why do some vendors ask for cash in full at the affair?
I was told by my band that they ask for cash for a couple of reasons: 1. so you can't bounce/cancel the check and screw them (as a few people have mentioned) 2. They don't charge sales tax, but they have to pay 'business taxes' like unemployment tax, etc. based on the income of the business. Any checks, etc. that go through the band's business account represent money that they have to claim as income and report and pay taxes on. Any cash, they can not report (illegally) and not pay taxes on. So, it costs them money if you pay in something other than cash.

so what he meant by tax included was 'business taxes?'. with 11 days to go i truly am losing my mind... i'm getting paranoid

I was always under the impression that a 'service' is not taxable since it is not a tangible item. I could be mistaken.

Sorry I'm newbie and wanted to know who paid cash versus check versus cc for certain vendors? And one versus another for saving sales tax?
