From the knot

Did you know that magnolia means love of nature and stephanotis signifies marital happiness? During the Victorian era, The Language of Flowers created an ultra-romantic language for lovers' correspondence in which flowers replaced words. If you want to suffuse your wedding flowers with symbolism, check out our guide to the most popular wedding flowers and decide which messages move you most. Happy gathering!

Christmas rose: Scandal

Fig: Idleness

Foxglove: Insincerity

Larkspur: Infidelity

Lavender: Distrust

Marigold: Grief

Mulberry: I shall not survive you

Raspberry: Remorse

Red carnation: Alas for my poor heart

Red poppy: Consolation

Rhododendron: Danger

Striped carnation: Refusal

Striped pinks: Refusal

White poppy: Sleep

Yellow carnation: Disdain

Yellow chrysanthemum: Slighted Love

Yellow lily: Falsehood

Yellow rose: Jealousy

Re: Why do we carry flowers?

That really doesn't answer your question...this doesn't really either but here is is anyway...
The blossoms you select for your wedding day are rooted in rich cultural and historical traditions. From ancient Rome and ancient Greece to the Middle East, we've gathered the best flower-related customs we could find. Read on for a worldly bouquet of floral trivia.

1. In Thailand, the mothers of the bride and groom walk to the altar to drape puang malai -- flower garlands -- around the couple's shoulders to wish them good fortune in their life together.

2. Swedish and Danish grooms sew small pockets of strong-smelling herbs like garlic, chives, and rosemary into their clothes for good luck.

3. The Indian groom's brother sprinkles flower petals over the couple at the end of the ceremony to protect them from evil.

4. Ancient Greek brides often carried ivy at their weddings as a symbol of their never-ending love for their sweeties.

5. Ancient Roman brides carried bunches of herbs to symbolize fidelity and fertility -- and to scare off evil spirits.

6. The Victorians, who were fascinated by the meanings of different blooms, popularized the wedding rose, which represents true love.

7. The bride originally tossed her bouquet to a friend as she left the festivities to keep that friend safe (by warding off evil spirits, of course) and to offer her luck; this came to mean that the single woman who caught the bouquet would marry next.

8. In a Greek Orthodox wedding, crowns of orange blossoms were traditionally made for the bride and groom -- they even matched the delicate embroidery on the bride's dress. The blossoms symbolize virginity and purity because they are white and fragile, and they emit a sweet, delicate scent.

9. In Tudor England, brides carried marigolds dipped in rosewater and ate them afterward, since they were thought to be aphrodisiacs!

10. According to Italian tradition, the front grill of the Italian getaway car is decorated with flowers, paving the road to a happy marriage.

11. In the Middle East, the bitter herb artemisia is incorporated into bridal bouquets to ensure that marriages will survive bitterness as well as sweetness.

12. According to Indian tradition, both the bride and the groom sport a floral headpiece.

DO what ever you want. When you chose a florist, discuss this with them. I am sure there is a way to create a bouquet with a muff.

Re: Why do we carry flowers?

OOH OHH!! I happen to know the answer and when you hear it you'll barf! lol

back in olden times, there weren't showers, and most the water, which there wasn't much of, was used to cook or for the children, so people usually took yearly showers.. the yearly showers were usually taken in?? yep, that's right June, which is why it's always been such a popular month.. and the reason for the bride carrying the big huge bouquet was because the smell from the flowers would cover the body odor..

eeeeeeuuuuuu!

yuck!
cippyloo, thanks for all the flower posts.

Ronnie&Theresa I think the muff will be awesome!! and so different. at some point someone (maybe shamma) posted a link to a company that did flower purses (a little cool/pretty bag that was brimming with blooms). maybe you could combine carrying the muff with a flower purse?? although you would have to see how it looked together. otherwise, i think the muff by itself would be so cool!!

Re: Why do we carry flowers?

Theresa, I just dug my old photo album out of my closet and I have a picture of a bride holding a muff as a boquet. It is white and it has red roses cascading down the front. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner right now but I may have one next week if santa is good to me. I am sure whatever florist that you go to has done it before because it is not that uncommon.
