Why don't companies give raises??? RANT

Ugh! I am so annoyed. I have been here a year and a half (advertising co.) and I was told that they only give raises twice a year (this is a HUGE company by the way). So, I patiently waited until May....May came and went and I heard nothing. My boss just got around to explaining to me that I now have to wait until October (the other time the co. gives raises).

The most important thing in running a company is keeping your employees happy!! We need an incentive to work hard! My colleague just left here because she was here for 3 years with no raise.

Let me reinforce that this is one of the largest advertising companies in the world, and they ARE NOT hurting for money. IT was explained to me that this is the 'state of the industry'.

I mean - at least give me a couple grand to shut me up for a little and to give me the incentive I need to continue to work hard.

My team loves me here, but nobody can seem to get raises. What is the deal?

FH works for a small company, and he is SUPPOSED to get a raise every year. But the only time he has ever got one is when he asked for it.

I get an automatic raise every year (I work for a university publisher). But last year, I got a measly 2%. I'm hoping they will be able to give a little more this year, cause I can definitely use the $$$.

We got raises every year except when the company filed Chapter 11

My old company (the one who downsized me and some others) wasn't able to give raises at one point. As much as you may think the company is huge and has a lot of money, they may not have the money to do that. I worked for a HUGE book publisher who has numerous bestsellers, but they had a hiring freeze and downsized.

Tough times right now.

look you have to get creative, if they don't want to give you cash have them pick up your phone bill, have them give you a company car, etc. That's what I did

I'm an admin assistant - so I don't really have anything I can have them pick up for me - I don't use my cell phone for work and I don't travel....

when everything settles down I am going to start looking for a higher paying job
