why save the dates?

why save the dates?

Why do you have to send out save the dates? I certainly dont want to do it. I know who I want to invite to my wedding and I know who is going to come so what is the point?

You don't have to do Save-the-dates if you don't want to. We did them b/c we have a lot of family and friends that are flying in for the wedding and we wanted to make sure they had plenty of time to book airfare in order to get a good price. Also, friends of ours will not be able to come b/c they got a distant relatives invitation 2 weeks before ours for the same date. We didn't send them a save-the-date, but I know if I did then they would be coming to our wedding instead of going to the one in Florida. HTH!!!

Save the dates are a good idea to send to your family that are out of town and you KNOW you're inviting OR if it's a holiday weekend of some kind so that people you really want to be there will be there. It gives them a chance to book flights or make arrangements. I would not send them to everyone you think you'll invite. You wouldn't send them to everyone you think you'll invite because it will definitely change.

I didn't do them at all because I knew my guest list would change 100 times. I'm SO GLAD I did NOT do save the dates because several people I thought I would invite I didn't, and we had to reduce our guest list because of budget.

I did it because I liked the magnet and wanted to give them as favors at my e-party. I thought it would be cute, especially because at the time of my e-party, we knew the date of our wedding.

However, now it's biting us in the azz because your guest list can change a lot in a year, so be careful!!!

I do think that because we gave Save the Dates, a lot of people reserved 11/12/06 for the wedding, so we're gonna get a LOT of yes's! (which i'm not so SURE is a good thing!)

Re: why save the dates?

We only sent save the dates to the family and friends that live out of town. All of our local friends knew about the wedding date because they see us more often. It was helpful for my OOT guests because most of them had booked their hotel rooms before the invitations went out.

You don't have to. I'm not going to. Save the dates are a very new trend. For years and years people just recieved regular old invitations, and that was enough. Those people who live far away who are important enough to be invited will know about the wedding by word of mouth anyway, so if they want to make arrangements to travel they'll be just fine.

If you don't want to, then don't do it. Save yourself the money.

you def dont NEED to. We chose to b/c we had a sunday night wedding and i wanted to make sure people were able to make the proper arrangements if they need to take off work for Mon.

you definitely don't NEED to! we're sending them because we want his family in ecudaor to be able to make arrangements to come (i.e., visas!) also, our wedding is in july, which is a popular month (IMO) for travel!

Yea i see it is a new trend. My fml sent out an email to all of her family that was like a save the date. I think that should surfice and all of my family knows about it. So I guess we are covered.

I sent it out b/c I thought it was cute, I wasn't having an engagement party, and I kinda wanted an 'engagement announcement' b/c my brother got engaged 3 months before us and noone knew about us! Its not a necessity. My friend who is getting married in March is not sending any out b/c she has too many people and she doesn't want so many people there so she doesn't want to give them notice! LOL

It's a good idea to send Save the Dates if you're getting married over a holiday weekend, during the summer, or during the holiday season.
I'm not sending them, but I am mailing out my invitations early!

Re: why save the dates?

We sent them out because we wanted to send out hotel information and give the OOT guests enough time to make travel arrangements if they wanted to come. In our case it helped us a lot. Our reception is at the hotel so we booked a large number of rooms so at this point, we almost filled the rooms that we're financially responsible for (there are only 10 left and we know of a lot of people who will stay and haven't booked yet). Also, FH's friend was planning a huge charity event for the day of our wedding and was able to change it to another day.

Re: why save the dates?

i am not sending them out. i am getting married on a saturday night, and it isn't near a holiday

my only OOT guests are one family from Florida - and my entire family from Italy.

We called them the day we booked our hall so they know about it and can make arrangements.

i couldnt justify the expense in my case!

along the lines of other brides.....

you don't have to send them. i, too, have a lot of out of state guests. i did not send them to anyone local. i wanted to give my family across the country and even in other countries a heads-up on making plans.

if sending an e-mail works for you and your family/friends. then go for it. it just so happens that my much of my family is not computer savy. so i sent the magnets that i diy-ed. they only cost me about $20 to make and postage.

Since we had a small wedding, we did not do it. Everyone that were invited knew about it.

I would think it's a good idea if you have 'acquaintances' being invited and people you don't see that often.

you dont HAVE to do STD's but we did them because our wedding was on a Friday and i wanted to make sure people had ample time to request to leave work early or take the day off.

you don't have to, but its a nice option.

FH and I made ours, and they came out great, and it was fun doing them together, from the designing, to the printing, and even stuffing the envelopes.
