Wireless internet access

Wireless internet access

So I want to bring my laptop with me on the LIRR - I'll need to be wireless right?

I heard you need all kinds of security software b/c it's easy for hackers to hack on wireless - is this true? What do you ladies use?

How much is wireless? I am sooo confused!

wireless only works within 150 feet or so, so you won't have access on the LIRR (unless they have wireless service on the train, do they?) If you're accessing someone else's wireless service, you just need the card. If you're setting up your own service, you'll be paying a monthly fee.

we have it and love it, but I don't know details because our landlord pays for it. We have firewalls up to prevent hackers.

Thanks Lisa!

So you have to be within 150 feet of something that 'emits' the wireless-ness?

So you can't be on the web while on the train? That S*&^S!!

ok, so there's a card to put in the laptop and then the fee, like for dial-up. that doesn't sound so bad.

where does the card go? (I am really CLUELESS now!)

right, you have to be within 150 feet of the signal (not 100% sure of the exact distance, but its something like that).

The card goes in the side of your laptop (at least that's where mine goes)

I don't they have it hear by one of my uncles was telling me about satellite access so you can be almost anywhere in his area, not home, to get access.

Re: Wireless internet access

You do need to be within range of an access point (which is a mini antenna).

The wifi card slides into the PCMCIA slot - same place you'd put your network card at work. You will usually find it on the side of your laptop (mine is on the right side). Newer laptops have the card built in...the cool thing about those is that they automatically pick up the signal when it is available.

Unless the LIRR is providing this service now, you won't be able to surf while on the train...but you can work off line until you get to a provider. Wifi access is available for a fee at Starbucks and I read something the other day about McDonald's offering fee access as well.

I hope this has been helpful.
