Woman attacked in LI mall parking lot
Bit attacker and escaped, but needed 12 stitches
WABC Eyewitness News
(Garden City - WABC, May 30, 2007) - A 20-year-old woman was attacked inside of her car in the parking lot at Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City Tuesday.
Police have put together a composite sketch of the suspect.
Eyewitness News reporter Joe Torres has the latest from Garden City.
The victim needed a dozen stitches to close a gash in her arm following the attempted robbery in the mall parking lot. The suspect got away with nothing, in part because the victim tried to take a bite out of her attacker.
Perhaps most surprising is that the attempted robbery happened in the middle of the afternoon, in the K-1 parking area just outside the main entrance of the Roosevelt Field Mall.
'It makes me a little nervous to go there now, even though I always shop there,' one shopper said.
Police say that's what the 20-year-old female just finished doing, shopping.
She got into her 2000 Volvo and was putting on her seatbelt when the suspect, with a knife or box cutter in hand, approached her open window and demanded cash and her cell phone.
That's when the victim made a very bold move.
'This lady is a very tough young woman and bit down very hard on his forearm, breaking the skin,' Nassau Detective Lieutenant Raymond Cote said.
The woman managed to drive away and notify mall security, who in turn contacted police. That's when she saw the cut on her arm that would required stitches.
Police describe suspect as hispanic male, around 30 years old, with an olive complexion and dark hair. They say he was wearing a white T-shirt.
Many women said they'll be more careful at the mall.
'I'm fearful,' one shopper said. 'I don't go there at night anymore. I used to.'
Police say they are thankful the victim escaped without any major injuries. However...
'We don't recommend that people try to engage criminals in this manner,' Cote said. 'But in this particular case, fortunately, she wasn't hurt more seriously.'
'I would probably just let him take it,' one shopper said. 'I wouldn't probably fight back, just because of the fact that he's got a knife. He's probably going to win over me.'
Investigators have already looked at security video from the mall, but they say that reveals few, if any, clues. They are now examining blood in the victim's car to see if it may lead to the suspect. Lastly, investigators say they have faith in the sketch and the hope that someone will soon step forward with critical information.
