we are in the process of redoing the house - and my dad said that it would be much more affordable for us to put carpeting down in the entire house - but i think it would look so much nicer for us to have wood flooring on the downstairs level (living room, dining room and den).
does anyone know anyone that would refinifh the floors for a decent price, or have recommendations/advice on pricing on wood floors vs carpeting.

Re: wood floors vs carpet help
do you currently have wood floors and need to refinsih them or are you putting down wood floors over a subfloor?
i would think you could refinish wood floors for a resonable price. if you adding floors, they do sell pre-finished wood flooring.

Re: wood floors vs carpet help
I don't have exact numbers but we found that it is cheapest to have our wood floors refinished, a little more for the pergo type wood florrs, and most expensive was carpet. We decided to have the wood floors done on the main floor, carpeting in the master bedroom and hallways, get a very light pergo wood floor in our Office (since the existing flor is badly stained) and leave their carpet in the 3rd bedroom.

Re: wood floors vs carpet help
The 'real' wood is really expensive, my husband is a floor layer but always says to go with 'the real thing' rather than pergo (pergo looks really nice but it doesn't last as long as a good oak floor) he even refuses to put it in our friend's and family's homes since he knows they'll be unhappy in a few years. We just put a 21'X20' great room on our house and did oak floors and it cost about $5000. Wall to wall carpet would have cost about $500. The pergo is cheaper, and worth it if you need a 'quick fix', but my husabnd has seen them fall apart at about year 5. I'd make an investment and have oak floors put in, you'll have them forever! Maybe do pergo in some rooms and put an area rug and splurge in the rooms that you entertain the most with the oak floor. If you need them refinished, I think it runs about $400 for 3 rooms. Let me know if you need more help, my husband has been doing floors for about 15 years.

Actually I have a floor guy coming Wednesday night. I will let you know what happens. The one thing to consider (and we still haven't decided what we are doing) is that if you do floors, you still need to buy an area rug.

i wouldn't suggest pergo either. durabilty aside, i just do not like the look. check out the prices of pre-finished wood at home depot or lowes. i 'think' they are just a 'tongue and grove' do-it-yourself job.

Re: wood floors vs carpet help
thanks guys we are new at this reinvitating stuff amd have no idea waht we are doing....
just from pulling up the carpeting it looks like there are decent wood floors underneath that would just have to be refinished... so i guess the best thing to do would be fo rme to get some number and call around and see what people charge for that - it would just be the living room, den and dining room -
if anyone has anyone that they recommend and contact info on them that would be great ..... j
