Did anyone leave the business world to become a teacher? If so, how did you go about doing it? When can you technically start teaching? I have no teaching experience and have my bachelor's degree...but not in teaching.

Re: Work
Were you thinking of one of the fellowship programs in the city? What is your degree in?

Re: Work
I work in the corporate world right now. My first step was to get my masters in elem. ed. I am starting my student teaching in the Fall and than I will be graduating from the elem. ed program. I also still have to finish up my NJ and NY state certifications. I hope after student teaching/complete my certifications, I can apply for jobs without a problem.

Re: Work
I have NO idea. Don't know how it works. My associates is in Business Admin and my Bachelor's is Interdisciplinary Studies (business, social science and hospitality mgmt). Don't know what I need to do, etc.

You are my hero! I want to do that! Now...how did you do observations while working? My job can't know my plans.
Also, how long did it take you to get your masters degree and what was your BA in?

The city fellowship programs are more lenient in terms of your background degree. Do you know what you want to teach (el. ed. or middle/high school subjects?).
ETA: Jozie is in NJ, but in NY you are going to have to take a lot of coursework at the undergrad. level before getting your master's to teach.

That's what I was afraid of. I would like elementary ed, possibly special ed. It's so scary thinking about it, but I'm not getting any younger!

Re: Work
Where do you live? I believe Old Westbury is the only SUNY on Long Island with elementary ed., which would be your cheapest option for classes.

Re: Work
I did it. I had my bach. in Interdisciplinary Studies too. There is no need to have a bach. in teaching.
When you decide on a school for your Masters just call them to see what you need. I needed to take 2 languages (hadn't taken any in college) and a history.....that's it!
I finished my Masters in 3 years (only took 2 classes per semester) but it could easily be done in two. Luckily, I had off on Weds. so I was able to observe then. I student taught last semester and I am subbing now.

Re: Work
my friend did it in rhode island. she'd worked in human resources for several years. in a way she got lucky b/c she got laid off and so was able to get into a certification program. she's student teaching now, and will be certified in may, then she's going to start a master's program i think.
my sister graduated from college with a physical therapy degree, worked as one for a few years, and then decided to go to cw post to get a master's in teaching. now she owns a pre-school. i don't think it necessarily matters what your undergrad was in.

You will need 36 credits in a discipline. You may be well on your way with the social sciences. Also, you may be able to get CLEP credit (credit by exam). I looked into social studies certification, but there are already so many ss teachers out there that it wouldn't have done much for me.
When I did my first masters', all my classes were in the evenings. I didn't have to do too many observations. People who worked took off part of the day or the whole day and most of them quit for student teaching.
You can FM me if you have any questions.

An important question for all of you that did it - Was it worth it? Do you love it?
