work question- what is appropriate???

Hi.

The head of our department is leaving the company after being here for 21 years.
His going away party is tonight.

We are insanely busy now at work. With this being said I am still going to make it my business to go to this function. A co worker of mine pretty much said in a meeting this morning that she was NOT going because she wanted to work late.

I kind of think that this is an event that we should ALL go to. I think it justs seems most appropriate. Though the supervisors said it was ok if she skipped it- you could tell that they were not too pleased.

I want to say something to her- should I??

I think it would be nice if everyone would go.
I wouldn't say anything to her about her not going though.

How close are you to this person? If you really care about how this may impact your other supervisor's opinion of them, then say something. Otherwise she's an adult and knows what the right thing to do is and can decide for herself.

in my experience...just do for you what is right. you are going to go because you have a nice set of values inside you. and it will be recognized!

It would be nice if everyone went but I do not think it is your place to tell people. You are doing the right thing by going though

I am very friendly with her. I want to tell her that it would look really bad if she did not go.

If you are really friendly with her, then I think its ok to say something to her.

if you are really friendly then maybe you should tell her to come along with you

Is is possible for her to 'show her face' and then go back to work? Perhaps she thinks it will look better if she's the only one working late while everyone else is partying....I don't know I don't know her or her work ehtic. But if you're friendly with her you can say something.
