Working at home

Hi Ladies. Ok, we just got married 4 months ago. :-) We have been talking about TTC next summer. I work in Manhattan and am hoping not to have to work in the City. However, Long Island doesn't pay (I am a legal secretary), so it would make more sense to stay where I am and work 2 days a week for the same salary I would get on the Island working 5 days a week. However, my ultimate dream would be a stay at home Mom. However, we are very nervous that we are not going to be able to afford to do that. Do you ladies have any suggestions on a career, job (stuffing freaking envelopes :-)) that I could do that could generate some income but that I would still be able to be the one to raise my child. I am sure that must be something I could do, as I am sure some of you are in my position. Avon, Partylite (actually, I am not a great salesperson) that is why Real Estate is out of the question too. A lot of my girlfriends have been thinking about taking the test for that. Any ideas would be so much appreciated! Me and my future thank you!

Denise- I am a stay a home Mommy. The only thing I can tell you is that there isn't much out there! I plan on becoming a baby sitter. My FH knows someone who wants a person to take her kids to school & pick them up. There is also cleaning offices at night. (which doesn't leave much alone time for you & hubby) It's not easy!! As for stuffing envelopes watch out that it's not for a fraud company. I might just send letters around to buisnesses around the area asking if they need help w/ things like that or data entry. Yeah I know stuffing envelopes is not legitamate. I was just joking. That stinks. Now I am starting to get really nervous. I love children soo much, so I would love to do some kind of babysitting thing. That would be the best job for me under any circumstances (I always wanted to work in Day Care but the money is not there and being single I had to stick where the money was) maybe I can put an ad in the paper or something. I mean I would NEVER call someone with an ad in the paper to watch my children. Maybe word or mouth. Well we have time, I was just trying to pick some brains. Thanks so much for responding.

Have you thought about finding a firm with Daycare?? there are so many co. that offer great daycare programs...

Suzanne, even the firms with daycare charge close to $1,000 a month (DH checked at his job, Cablevision, they charge based on your salary, those that make less they will pay much less).
So it has to be worth it financially.

...and im sure you still have to 'Get to work' and will be tempted to hang around the daycare glued to your child !

Its a tough decision....

Ive thought about doing things at home, or even part time, but part time/hourly is a fraction of what I was making before, almost not worth me leaving the house, lol. I may do something part time in the near future just to get out and socialize !

Denise, I agree with Anna's perspective...working has to be worth it for you to go back, and most companies charge employees a ton of money to have the kids in on-site daycare. I used to work at Computer Associates 3 years ago, and I remember that it [daycare] was expensive.

Have you thought about becoming Pampered Chef consultant? I have a friend that has two little boys and she works as a PC consultant doing parties at least 3-4 times a month, and she brings home almost enough to cover her mortgage payment. She puts in very little effort and loves it, and says that it's her opportunity to get out of the house a few nights, bond with other women and have some adult conversation. But, she has the majority of her time to spend with her boys and her hubby.

Are there any jobs that would utilize your legal secretary skills? What about medical transcriptions, or how do they do the court recording - does that get typed up later? Maybe you could check with some of the smaller, local lawyers and see if you could offer some skills where you could pick up paperwork and return - not sure if that works because I'm not sure just what is involved with being a legal secretary, but maybe some smaller lawyers or other professions could use some help that you'd be able to do at home.

You might want to look into medical billing. Its basicly data entry but you need to learn medical coding, which should be a snap since you can handle legal. There are companies that train, provide the program and work or it you can go out on your own and develop your own client base. I dont have any contact information but if you search around the net Im sure you'll find something.

Denise - I'm so sorry! It's silly, but I assumed that you would have heard about Pampered Chef already.

It's similar to being a Tupperware consultant. You get started by asking your friends/family to host parties for you and you develop a chain of contacts and try to generate parties through their guests.

However, the products from Pampered Chef are geared toward making everything related to cooking/baking and kitchenware easier and nicer, rather than primary food storage, like Tupperware. Check out their website -

My sis just got involved in a 'work from home' gig that she's pretty psyched about. The website is
www.ahealthyworld.com . The website says THE MOM TEAM, but its not just moms that are involved, it anyone and everyone. It was just started by moms.

I dont know all too much about it, but from what I know its a wholesale club, kinda like COSTCO, and your role is to
1) Advertise online (or post it at Waldbaums or your Dr.'s office!) to get others to A)Join the club and B)Help advertise it also.

For everyone that joins from your ad, you get a certain percentage of what they purchase for life.
The club has tons of perks like GREAT return policies if you are not happy, it only costs i think $30 a year and $12 annual renewal after that.
and its known for its products all being made from natural ingredients, safe, etc.

Let me know if anyone wants more info. Im sure theres more to it that I dont know about...
