I am a lawyer and I work really long hours. I can't attend those bridal showcases because I am NEVER out of work early enough. For other people that work long hours, how are you finding the time to listen to bands/book vendors, etc.?
for example, I am writing this while still at my desk! FH is home already, probably watching American Idol -- grrrr.

Sometimes - I try to get as much done on Saturday for planning because we have my soon-to-be stepson on Sundays and I want to spend time with him!

I work long hours as well, I teach high school and own a dance studio, and to make matters even worse, I am planning my wedding on LI from Maryland!
I hired a wedding planner. We hired her 3 weeks after we got engaged. She keeps me on track, lets me know what needs to be done when, is my event designer, secratary, big sister! She is awesome!!! With my crazy hours, I don't know what I would do!! She takes the stress away, and I love the fact that she knows our wedding inside out!

I would do stuff on the weekends. I live out of out state and we just make appointments on the weekends. As for your future step son... you can bring him to places like the DJ showcases. He'd enjoy them.

I am in the same position (same career actually) [only on a three month fellowship at the moment]- here are a few of my tips based on what I have done so far (if, like me, you opt not to hire a planner):
1. Make appts on Saturdays early AM (you may be more likely to make them).
2. Don't shop around too much - $100 saved may not be worth the time you loose.
3. Get recommendations from other brides, the site, etc. Also ask girls on here for prices they were quoted. It saves the 'shopping around time'. For example, rather than meeting with tons of photogs, Iook at people's proofs on here and pick 2-3 photogs based on proofs in the albums of bride's on here. Email the brides and see what they paid. If it's reasonable for you, make an appt.
4. if like my FH, your FH has a better schedule, let FH know you are just overwhelmed and ask him to be in charge of something he has interest in (my FH is into photography so he has the lead on finding us a photog). I think limos are also something FH could maybe have an interest in taking the lead on.
5. When you are eating lunch at your desk, get on here, the knot or wedding channel and look around and research.
6. Realize that many people plan weddings in 6 months. So many girls on here are so on top of things - I try not to worry about it or feel like I am behind. Many are just so excited about the wedding, many just have more time than I do - so I try not to get myself concerned. Instead, I look to these girls for tips, possible vendors, etc.
I think the key is one thing at a time and just not taking it to intensely. GL - maybe we can start an 09 Lawyer-Brides Thread!!!
