Working Moms...does anyone worked a flex schedule?

Well the good news is my supervisor sort of hinted that the don't want to lose me and are willing to work out a shorter schedule for me so I can continue working here after I give birth. (They are afraid I will look for a job closer to home since I work in the city).

I work for a big, conservative company so I'm surprised that they would be willing to let me leave early.

Just wondering if any working moms out there work a compressed schedule? I'm not sure what to ask for...assuming they are willing to meet my request?

Aren't you lucky!! We work for the same company and they never ONCE offered that to me!!! And still haven't! I will say they were very good w/me when I was preggo with the leaving early to go to the dr, etc. and have been great w/this whole ordeal.

Good for you Irene!! I'm happy they will do that for you!!! Now tell your boss to get on the horn with mine and offer it to me!

One of my friends who is due in May got a deal like Michele and only has to work 1 day a week in the city, gets to stay home the other 4. Lucky

Deb oops!!! Nothing is confirmed yet I think they were just seeing if I was open to it.

In terms of my schedule I think they are willing to let me leave early (maybe 4:30?? I usually stay until 6pm) after the baby is born but I would still be full-time and come into the office 5 days.

I live on LI so if I continued to go into NYC everyday I would be away from the baby for 12 hours a day! Plus Scott works in Manhasset and his commute can take 1.5 hours somedays. So we had no choice but to figure something out.

I think if I had to commute 2 hours each way everyday I would go nuts!

Technically flex-time usually means 40 hours per week, but not on the 9-5 type schedule. Usually it means you do maybe 4 10-hour days instead or something like that.

Irene,

Are you an exempt employee or on the clock. With us you can have the option of flex days, where you alter your traditional work schedule (eg. 7 - 3, 8 -4..etc.) or compressed work week where you work longer some days to allow you to take one day off every week or so

This is exactly the arrangement that one of my old jobs used to offer. It is very beneficial but only if it actually HELPS you...some of the flextime options can actually work against you. I used to work the compressed work week - which means 4 days a week @ 10 hrs a day...off on Fridays. But, I used to get phone calls all day on Friday and have to check email once or twice, so I never really had the full day off anyway.

Honestly I'm not even sure if they are offering me a compressed schedule (such as work longer days) and take a day off or just shorter hours (i.e., 7-3 or 8-4). I just got so excited they are considering it.

Thanks everyone...I wanted to get a sense of what to request.

Michelle I will FM you...you may know more than me.

I work for that co. too & that's awesome...
Acutally Irene, I've been meaning to tell you that your supervisor is on my LIRR line- small world.

I know 2 girls in the sales division, and they worked out something where they both work on the same accounts, but one works 2 days a week, and the other 3 days a week, rotating weeks. Not sure how your dept works, but maybe something like that is an option if another woman is in the same situation? I'm sure your supervisor can make anything work... that's awesome!
