A friend of mine just found out she is expecting, after she missed her period two months. She didn't want to find out because she didn't want to give up going out and drinking. My question is she is due in early May and was drinking up until this week. Does anyone know how harmful this is to the baby?

Re: Worried about friend
how often was she drinking and how much was she drinking? I believe the most damage can be done within the first trimester, but I'm not absolutely sure

Re: Worried about friend
She was drinknig a lot...she was in Ireland for two weeks in August so I would say she drank every day. And since she returned she would go out and drink heavy stuff...vodka, gin etc on weekends.

Re: Worried about friend
wow, I think I'd do a search on alcohol and pregnancy and see what it says, I'm not PG and I'm not positive on what I said in the above post, but she needs to tell a doctor what she's been doing ASAP. Not only 2 months of drinking, but 2 months of not taking prenatal vitamins and maybe not eating properly. I hope all goes well.
Wow Scary stuff. I am seeing her tonight for the first time since she found out. Hope all goes well. Thanks for your help.

Re: Worried about friend
I wouldn't worry about it. This has happened to so many of my friends and all of them had happy, healthy babies. As long as she takes extra super care of her body from this point forward, i'm sure she'll be fine. (My sister was at my bachelorette party and had no idea she was preggers....)

I think what scares me the most about your friend, and please don't take offense, is that she didn't want to find out because then she would have to give up drinking. Is she going to be able to give it up now for the next 7 months?
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is not that common but it is a very real possibility that your friend put her child in danger by drinking so much. The first trimester is when the baby really needs nutrients and vitamins to help is develop and form everything.
Try to make sure she doesn't drink anymore and that she gets in a lot of protein, calcium and vitamins.
I wish her the best.

I agree - what's most alarming is that she didn't want to know so she could keep on drinking. That does not bode well for the baby.

Re: Worried about friend
Well she tells me she will not be drinking from this point forward, but I am still worried. She told another friend she will drink wine spritzers. Shouldn't she not be drinking at all?? We all told her how important it is to take care of yourself and she agreed so we shall see. It is almost like she is not excited.

Re: Worried about friend
Each doctor has their own belief about drinking. Mine said no alcohol at all. Some doctors tell you a glass of wine upon occasion is ok. But your friend may have already done some damage by binge drinking before she knew she was pregnant. If I were her I would cut out the alcohol from this point on and hope that her previous drinking has not harmed the baby.

Re: Worried about friend
As a friend of hers, I would get her some help. If she can't bear the thought of going 9 mos without a drink to protect her baby, then she obviously has a drinking problem. Have you talked with her about this? How did your friend respond to her when she said she would drink spritzers during pregnancy? So sad.
If she doesn't want the baby, tell her I'll adopt. I'm so sad right now.

Re: Worried about friend
Well we both strongly discouraged spritzers. Hopefully she will wake up and do the right thing. Maybe she just needs some time to get used to the idea and her outlook will change. Hopefully!

Re: Worried about friend
It sounds like shes in denial, I would be very concerned if this were a friend of mine. She needs to wake up and realize she's growing a life inside of her.
