My mom just returned form a cruise. At her dining table was a manager if a David's Bridal who was telling some of the disaster stories. Here's one of the worst I heard:
Bride's FMIL came into David's and teary eyed stated that the Bride was killed in a car accident and to please cancel the order for her dress and her BM dresses. Paid any open balance and requested that the bride's family be left alone and not contacted as they were very distraught.
As it turns out, and you've probably guessed it, the Bride was fine, the FMIL did not want her son to marry this girl. Somehow this manager got the dresses they needed. They got married anyway.
What an evil woman that FMIL was!

OMG!!!!!!! That's absolutely horrific! Imagine if your FMIL did that!??? I would probably think twice of marrying into that... or make sure that we lived on a small island that no one (not even her), could find us... sheesh!

It kind of sounds like an urban legend to me...but then again some of the behavior I've seen in regards to weddings, anything is possible.
