WORST weekend EVER - We need a new car..PLEASE suggest a CHEAP car

Original post by marymoon

Ugh..after everything we went through this weekend, NOW, Doug brought in his car for inspection and it will cost $1200 to make the car pass inspection. Also, the widnows don't open and there's no A/C so we have to fix one or the other..A/C would be $1000.

We just spent $1200 to fix it a month ago.

So rather than sending good money after bad, we have to buy a new car. We can't afford one, and were sp psyched because my car payments will be over in august, and that $$ was going to be all we can save for the wedding...guh...but anyway, sh*t happens, and we need a new car.

I guess it has to be as cheap as possible and good.

Also, we're first time buyers and recent college grads, do you know anyone with special financing for that?

ANY ideas would be GREATLY appreciated.

thanks

FH bought an Elantra two years ago for $13K.

You can't go wrong with Toyota... I'm going back after leasing a Jaguar... getting rid of undependable luxury or solid, dependable performance.

The Prius is on back-order from most of the dealerships (DH works for Toyota). There are a bunch of Scions in stock. They are inexpensive and I get about 32 MPG from my XB.

Good luck. Sorry to hear you had problems

Thanks everyone. I've been online all day. It's so confusing when you don't know what all the cars are and all of the trim levels. I called up the VW dealership where I used to work and I explained the situation andw e mght luck out. They just changed the bodystyle on the Jetta and they have 2 or 3 left of the old bodystyle which they are willing to discount. YAY. This could work out really well because we planned to buy a Jetta after we got married anyway, so now we can buy it now instead of buying a car we don't like now and then buying the jetta. And we know how VW's drive because I have one etc. But we'll see. I was hoping to get a cheaper car. this is kind of sprug on us all of a sudden.

Does anyone have any experience with kias? they seem to be the cheapest cars around

jenn, is yours and doug's credit good.

i would shop around to all the dealers in the area, queens have alot of them. If your credit is good, go in there and tell them what you can afford per month and have them work with you to get a decent car (new or used) that won't cripple you on the monthly payments.

Doug's credit is very good. He has a lot of open credit accounts but he pays ALL of them on time. my credit is not great, so we may just put the car in his name only.

Another added thing is that as a recent college grad and first time buyer it's easier to get accepted for financing. VW said they have deals as low as 1.9%, but then you give up rebates or something. Who the hell knows. It's all too confusing.

Some places have no interest financing which is good, but 2% really isn't SO bad..

I figured that if we can get a car for 19000, pay 3000 down at 2% interest it's under $300 for 60 mos or $350 for 48 mos. That's not bad. We might go for 60 mos just because it'll less money we'll have to pay out before the wedding and then after the wedding we can always overpay

FSIL's sister bought one about a year ago and has had tons of problems with it. She was so excited to buy her first new car and has really had a tough time with it.

How about buying something of better quality that's not brand new?

I am really bad in that I would never buy a used car. you never know what you're getting. Plus the certified pre owned stuff is usually as expensive as a new car. Fh's parents like thier hyundai. i'm going to ask them about it. See how much it was and if we can get a deal. I really don't like them, but $$ is an issue, and who knows? i might not be able to get one of those cheap jettas

jenn, IMO, you can get a really good used car, they have lemon laws and certification stuff so that you don't get screwed

I second that.... DH got his '99 Honda CRV in 2001 from carmax for $18K and it only had 13K miles on it. He traded in his '95 Nissan Maxima which needed $3K worth of work and Carmax gave him $5K for it towards the purchase of the CRV.

If you want a new car, Hyundai's are pretty good. My GF has one and has never had problems with it. Plus they have great warranties.

we have a ford focus zx3.

we really enjoy it.. it has had NO problems- it gets rather good grades by Consumer Reports (which is why we purchased it)....

we have taken it on MAJOR road trips, the gas mileage is EXCELLENT and it was VERY affordable...

I bought my car 1.5 years old from a dealer and it was a great decision - it was still on the origianl warrantee. The value of the car drops so much the first 2 years and your insurance will be cheaper on a 2 year old car as well.
