I don't understand why she's giving it away? Just because she had a baby? You can have babies and cats together....

I guess i never thought of that as an issue as FH's family members all have cats, and dogs, and babies and it was never a problem. Just a matter of getting used to, for the cats and the parents. I would give it a shot first, I have a cat and that's what I plan on doing.
I just feel very strongly about people giving away pets without trying.....I made a commitment to raise a pet, and unless the pet proves to be a problem/danger around my baby (which then OF COURSE other arrangements would have to be made) it's just going to be another 'project' so to speak, to work on, getting the cat used to the baby. Again, I've seen it done without issue so that's why I asked.

yeah i agreee with you MissLiss---i absolutely think that giving away a pet is something that should be the LAST resort.
to the OP--honestly I would ask your friend why all of a sudden six months after having a baby she wants to get rid of her cat? pets are a lifelong committment, not a 'lets keep it until its convenient'
unless her baby has developed severe allergies--i think you should maybe see what her motive is. plenty of kids and babies are around cats. i feel bad for the poor kitty who has become comfortable in its home and is now being kicked out cause of the baby.

I completely agree. My sister has a 17 month old baby and a brand new born (was just born this past Tuesday!) and she also has cats who are around 5-6 years old. They are soooo sweet towards the babies. They have are actually NOT declawed and they have not even ONCE put their claws out to either baby. They are loving, gentle, and a real part of the family!!!

I completely agree with both of you! I, along with other family members and friends, have grown up with cats and have personally never heard of a cat being an issue with babies...especially one jumping into a crib. I actually find cats to be pretty independent and very affectionate.

I agree with MissLiss. I also feel very strongly about people giving up animals unless there is a legitimate reason, like aggression towards the child or allergies, etc.

Re: would anyone like to adopt our cat?
i have 2 cats and they were around when we had our baby- my FMIL got us a crib tent- goes over the crib to keep cats out and the baby in when they get big enough to try and climb out (we never really needed) the baby crying kept the cats away from her when she was little and now they sleep with her in her bed-
but some people are really scared of them laying on the baby's chest ect..
hope they can find a nice home for the kitten

I'm not faulting the OP...I just feel bad when I hear something like that.

Re: would anyone like to adopt our cat?
oh yeah--i also wanna say i know its not the OP's fault about all this....obviously she's trying to do the right thing and find a home for the little kitty. maybe if she expresses some of the things we've been saying here to her friend--she might change her mind!
i just hate seeing pets get lost in the shuffle of life. they are our 'fur babies' until a 'real one' comes along to so many people....and then its out with the old and in with the new.
i love love Love my kitty---he's the best. when DH and i start having kids, i know it will be an adjustment for the kitty. but sometimes i think the fears people have associated with cats and babies are almost old wive's tales. like the cat will smother the baby or something...i think the most common misconception is that a cat will 'suck a baby's breath'. This myth is deemed false on Snopes.com
I hope the OP's friend can work something out without having to give away the cat!

Re: would anyone like to adopt our cat?
I really dont understand why when people have babies they throw away all their pets. Unless the animal is harmful to the baby i see no reason to rehome. I wish there was a special 'pet' license so people would realize that pets live longer than 'whats convenient' and things happen in life like babies, allergic spouses and relocating. I wish people would think long and hard and have a back-up plan for their pets in the event something really unfortuate comes along where they have to rehome there 'beloved' pet.
This is not directed at the OP since this is not her pet and she is trying to help out a friend. Sorry if i offended anyone. I have probably heard every excuse in the book as to why people need to give up a pet and some are pathetic, while others who really need to give up an animal cant because our rescues and shelters are overful.

Re: would anyone like to adopt our cat?
hey girls...yeah i didnt really get into it with her, she just told me that she would want to find the cat a new home and i respect her decision. I think with the new baby and having to take care of the cat and cleaning up the cat hair and with the baby starting to crawl and stuff she just seems overwhelmed. I would have taken her if FH wasn't allergic to it but he cant breathe around cats. The cat, Fiona, is a scaredy cat and usually just stays by herself and hides all the time. If anyone hears of anyone wanting a cat, let me know!
