I asked a vendor for references and he looked shocked and said he's never been asked that before! Never in the past had I had a reaction like this! Would you trust them?

no... and they shouldnt be insulted either... LIW kind of acted as references for me because I researched most of my vendors heavily before making appts.

It is extremely important to ask for references and if they sounded surprised, then I woulnd't book them!

How can he be insulted??? Most vendors offer them up to you or have testimonials posted somewhere. They should glad to give them too if they have nothing to hide. If they dont they may not be the vendor for you.

no, if they are professionals they should offer references without questions. and i agree, if they are offended, don't book them

I would not be insulted at all and if they don't have anything to hide, they shouldn't feel insulted either. Good for you for asking about references!!
