So I am at work today & I am having a huge problem with a web database service that our company uses. I had to call them six times today just to fix my login. ANYHOO...
So I tell her my name, which is a very long, very Italian name, and the idiot beatch from Colorado says 'what are you one of the Soprano's or something?' I flipped my lid...and I thought it was way out of line. I asked to speak with her manager & made a complaint. So my boss comes over & essentially told me I made too big a deal out of it...so...would you be insulted by her comment??????
UPDATE: The company called & oficially apologized & said they will not *charge* the company for the help call. The woman herself left me a long apologetic message on my voicemail. I called her back & accepted her apology.

I grew up in Colorado (until I was 12) and it is a different world. I would be offended, and I'm glad you spoke to that woman's supervisor. My mom still lives out there and every time I go visit they think I live in like some other world. They ask if it is really like in the movies, ask if I've ever really met people like Tony Soprano, ask if its really rough and tumble..but then again..people in NY ask if they still drive horse and buggies out there!!!
Who think people in Colordo drive horse & buggies! I know years ago,(the 70's maybe)my dad's cousin moved out there & his Croation name (sounds more Italian to me,actually) was too ethnic & he actually changed hisanme.
I thought things would have changed actually.
I would have been pissed, but not told the Supervisor, but only, b/c I don't have the guts to.

Can't help it. I am surprised you don't get that more often.
I can see it beingfunny if it were a more familiar setting, like if I were at my bar job...it is a little more casual, but this was at my corporate job.

This was a serious issue and I am glad the company did the right thing. I hope you feel better about the whole thing.

I think you were right, I think that your boss should not have told you it was not that big of a deal. I'm glad the company called back and that the woman left an apology for you.
People should act professionally when at work unless you know the other person REALLY well and know they know what you are saying is a joke and won't take it the wrong way.
ETA: I have a really unique maiden last name but seriously no one at work at any job (unless I knew them very well) ever made a comment EXCEPT once an attorney said something but it was more of a 'do people give you nicknames' question and it wasn't harassment. He still even apologized later for asking and I said 'why are you apologizing? You asked a question that I'm sure everyone is dying to ask but too PC to do it'. Hee. But if he said 'that's a weird last name' to me I think I would be put off.
