My DH's dad and his step mom came to stay over last night. They have never stayed over before. Well they have 2 little dogs, like maltese yorkie type dogs that go everywhere with them, they literally are their children. Don't get me started
Anyway, at THEIR house, they pee and poop on the floor in their own special bathroom that they put newspaper down for. They occassionally pee in their yard. When I heard they were coming over, I told my DH they better take them outside to pee. Besides them barking at Casey in HER house LOL, they were ok. I mean, they are cute alll....but ok I will continue. I went to bed and got up in the middle of the night to take some tylenol and i step in newspaper. In. My. Clean. Bathroom When I went to bed it was not there. I was disgusted. This is MYT house and I do NOT allow Casey or the cats to pee in the house. Casey is housebroken and the cats use the litter. I think it was highly inconsiderate of them not even to ask me. When we all got up, his step mom told me they tried to take the dogs outside to pee but they wouldn't so she had to set up the paper. Give me a break. It's a dog. Make it pee outside. Then she cleaned the newspaper up and asked me where to throw it. So I said, Well I will take it and throw it out OUTSIDE so MY dog does not smell urine in the house.
I am so annoyed!!!!!
Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: Would you be mad?
Chewie is trained the same way, to go inside on wee wee pads in a litter tray so it wouldn't bother me. I just throw them outside in the garbage when he goes and it doesn't smell. I didn't know it would bother someone. I bring him to my MIL's w/ his tray and she doesn't mind, but now I am thinking she might. He also goes to the bathroom outside but it is great when it is snowing, raining or freezing.

Re: Would you be mad?
I have to say, I'd freak out if someone put newspaper on my nice clean bathroom floor for their dog to go to the bathroom...without even asking me. I'd get totally grossed out.
But, now my question is: are small dogs really that hard to potty train?

Re: Would you be mad?
some small dogs can't go outside in certain weather conditions.
I know my dog can't go outside under 30 degrees....
When I take her around, she uses wee wee pads- like at my mom's.
Newspaper is gross b/c it leaks through..
She should've asked you.

Re: Would you be mad?
what i'm really annoyed about is that she didnt ask. and it grossed me out because i keep my bathroom really clean and i dont want my own dog to smell the urine.
why can't small dogs go outside under a certain temp? seems like a man-made trait!
eta i had a poodle growing up - she peed outside when we told her to - never inside! i'm not challenging - just curious.

Chewie goes outside if we walk him and inside on the pads if we don't. He's multi-trained, lol.

Jenn I would be totally sceved by the newspapers and irrate to say the least! Wet newpapers leave marks. You got up in the middle of the night and step on newpaper, you are lucky you didn't step in something else! Jenn I would definitely tell them if they HAVE to do it this way that it must be on a wee wee pad or tray next time!
Karissa, I think a tray or wee wee pad wouldn't bother me as much because there is a barrier between the urine and my floor, newspaper is not enough of a barrier. While I might not LOVE the idea, I would completely understand it. My mother has a bischon who stresses himself when he is not home, and has 'bathroom' issues (needless to say Samson does not go many places) but if that is an issue I would rather a tray or wee wee pad.

Molly's natural body temp is 105 degrees... so she feels cold a lot more than we do...
When I put her out she literally shakes from the cold so bad she can barely walk.
Plus- she is so little- how could she walk in the snow?

I think you are over reacting. My mom has yorkie and I wouldn't mind. Also it is hard for them to go out when it is freezing - they do not keep warm like regular dogs.

I would have liked to have been asked. I think it would bother me, especially when the smell can cause a chain reaction of them spraying in the house (if you have male dogs). JMHO
Plus, a wee-wee pad is way less likely to leak...we trained Fascinus on them when we first got him & living in a basement apartment - sometimes we did not get him up the stairs in time, so we trained him to use the pad if he couldn't 'hold it'. They never leaked, as far as I can remember, and they also have a tray to keep them in place.

that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. And, you are talking about your own mother. I am talking about my stepmother in law. Who didn't even bother to ask me. There's a difference.
Karissa - yes, a tray is totally different That I prob wouldn't have minded - if she asked.
Dina - you know i love Molly! I didn't realize her body temp was so much higher than humans.

When someone is a guest in my home - I want them to feel at home. Also, I wouldn't have cared if it was my mom, friend or in-law. I guess I don't sweat the small stuff.

Re: Would you be mad?
the only thing i can understand is that youre upset that she didnt ask.
in all honesty, do you realllly think that if Casey smells their pee shes gonna suddenly be un-housebroken?
when my mom comes here she brings Jenna, her puppy and puts a pad down. she doesnt have to ask me... but that me and my place where i normally have pads down.
would you rather the dogs just went on your floor rather than the newspaper?,,, it sounds like her dogs arent housebroken and that if she didnt put paper down then those two probably would just go on the floor.
my dogs go outside or on the pad.
Maybe youd understand if you had a small dog.
I wouldnt make an issue out of it. You have to pick your fights. I dont think its something worth getting in a tiff about with your in-laws. I'd just make it more clear to her that you absolutely do not want them going on paper in YOUR house you know. she should respect that.
ETA: when i went to my future sis-in-laws house i brought Lukin and he was a baby and i was potty training him. i put paper down for him but took him outside like every 5 minuts. she never said anything to us about it.
eta: also, i didnt realize that maybe you stepped in dirty newspaper. Yeah, that would be disgusting.
