I am looking at bands and not all of them showcase. Is it bad to book a band based on a dvd sample???

No I wouldn't. I would want to see them in person and how they interact with the crowd.
I booked my band at a showcase and got their dvd afterwards to show family. But personally, I'd never book without seeing them live.
What bands are you looking at? I highly recommend Code Bleu!

I think it's fine. A lot of bands are booked so far in advance they don't have to do showcases. And they will not invite you to someone else's party because then they are responsible for you (if you act inappropriately, etc).

unless you have heard great things about the band from people you trust or have personally been to a wedding where that band played...I would say absolutly not. It's the most important part of the party. My band doesn't do showcases but I did get to go to their rehearsal in the city. Ask about going to their rehearsal.

I booked my band within two days of hearing them. They are based out of NYC and because I was booking for 11 months later, I was nervous vendors would book quickly. I heard the band on three different websites and my MOH has worked with them through event planning. They sent me the DVD and they sounded amazing.

I personally wouldn't...I need to really see and hear them play...for my steel drum band for CH we saw them at a showcase and went to see them rehearse also. Bands are a lot of money, you want to make doubly sure that you are getting what you pay for

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. I did use DVDs and online showcases to narrow my choices down, but we went to a few showcases in person before making a decision.

I am thinking about Code Bleu - what sold you on them? I wanted Times Square Orchestra, but they are booked on our date...

Code Bleu is amazing. They were booked on my date, unfortunately.
I have seen them at 3 weddings, and they really kept the party going! If they are available, definitely look at them!
I also liked Renegade a lot.

i personally wouldn't.... i like to see how the crowd and i respond in a live setting, they could be showing you their best perform not necessarily how they always are

I agree def go see them live. Also my big thing is how do you know if that is them or someone else singing ie Ashley Simpson!
Also base it on opinions ask people who know or have seen that band what they think

I don't think I would. The DVD is going to be their best performance ever, not necessarily their usual.

the reason people pick a band over a DJ is because of the live entertainment factor and you cannot get that feeling from a DVD.

I wouldn't either. You have to see them live...the DVD could be their best performance of 10... ya never know.
happy hunting.

One song:Cante Partiro by Andrea Boccelli. When FH heard the lead male sing it, he turned to me and said 'Book'em!' The second female vocalist also does an amazing Christina Aguilera. We really enjoyed the showcase, were very impressed, and loved that they make it so obvious that they love what they do.

I wouldn't book based on a DVD. It's so different to see and hear them live. We actually booked a band when we saw them live and then saw their DVD - if we based it on the DVD we wouldn't have booked them.
