How busy is the street? Very? I had an apartment on Bellmore Ave. and it wasn't too bad. That street was busy.

Remember a house is a huge commitment and if living on a busy street bothers you... then tell the FH no.
I know this bothers a lot of people.... mainly because it prevents them from letting their children play in front of the house. Too risky on a busy street to have the kid all of a sudden run into traffic.
I know if I presented this to my girl... i'd get a BIG NO.... and I can't argue that. She actually just brought this up last night as a matter of fact.

This is a place you will be coming home to for years to come....where your kids will play outside. If you are not 100% comfortable with it - then no, don't buy it.

I agree 100%, you have to have no reservations in the house that you buy. It is a huge non-returnable purchase and a huge commitment!!

Re: would you buy a house on a busy street ?
We live on a street that is not what I would call busy, but it is a pass-through street, not an interior subdivision street. It's not the traffic that is the problem, but the other aspects of living on a busier street.
For us, that was one of the trade-offs. We don't have children so that wasn't an issue in the decision, but it does make it harder to get to meet neighbors, you don't get as many trick-or-treaters, sometimes you hear a bit more traffic noise, etc. There is less of a sense of community or neighborhood.
On the plus side, the streets are always plowed right away during snow storms, since it's also a bus route. And I'm sure it affected the price of the house a bit, so we were able to get a bit more square footage then we'd been finding in our budget.
Between the neighbors on either side of us there are 10 children, ranging from about 2 - 13. Both neighbors have high fences around the back yards, so you can raise children near a busy street, but they won't be able to ride bikes in front of the house, etc.

I wouldn't buy one on a very busy street for all the reasons everyone said and because resale might be a lot harder. The market is inflated right now and you never know how things will be when you go to sell.
We bought a house on a slightly busy street but nothing where I would worry about traffic noise. I wont feel comfortable having the kids play ball but we got a big backyard so they wont need the street for that anyway.

i grew up on a busy street and would have no problem buying a house on a busy street. when you have children you have to teach them at an early age not to go in the street. we didn't play in the front alone, but we were out there with my parents. we had a back yard with a pool...there wasn't much reason to be in the front.

Re: would you buy a house on a busy street ?
We live on a corner and the street that runs past the side of our house is a pass through street, pretty busy, which I didnt realize at the time. It doesnt bother my DH in the least but it does bother me. Both our bedroom and my sons bedroom have windows on that side and you cant really leave those open with noise - its not horns honking or anything like that, just the sound of cars passing. I have a young son and another on the way and he definitely cannot play on that side of the house, I would never feel comfortable with it. Luckily the bulk of our property is not on that side but still. We dont have an issue with coming out of our driveway b/c the street we face is quiet but that's another thing to consider on a busy street. If you think you will have trouble getting out or even in (because people ride your tail and dont realize your directional means you're puling into a driveway) that can be a PITA.
But you really have to weigh the pros & cons. Sometimes you have to have some kind of trade off but it's a very personal decision.
Good luck.

another thing to think about is parking - unless the house has a huge driveway, people won't want to (or be able to) park on the street when you have parties or whatever
