Would you call the police?

Would you call the police?

I think I am turning into an old lady - or maybe not. On a number of occasions I would come home or leave my apt. (we live in a brownstone) and there would be kids hanging out on our stoop. So I always ask them 'Can I help you?' Usually I get no response or a 'No' So I will continue to ask or say 'Do you live here' Now with the other times the kids would get up and leave. This morning - they wouldn't leave and it really irked me, it also made me feel unsafe. So now I am thinking for future occurrences (which I am sure there will be) if they refuse to leave would you call the police (not 911) and say 'I have people loitering on my property who won't leave, can you send a patrol car by if there is one in the area?'

Is that to much? But it just drives me crazy that kids are so rude these days. Don't sit on my stoop smoking and loitering. What would you do?

If you really don't fee safe, then call.

I agree, if you feel unsafe or a strange vibe I would definitely call.

I take it you're renting? Because if you own that brownstone it is not even a question of 'can I help you' but 'please remove yourself from my property!' You are NOT an old lady for not wanting kids hanging out on your steps who are behaving in a way that makes you feel unsafe. Call the cops if they refuse to leave.

I guess that is what is making me feel like an old lady - it is not that they physically threaten me, it is just that they are hanging out - blocking my stairs, dropping cigarettes. If they get mad that I am asking them to move they 'might' retaliate - that is what kind of scares me. I hate that I have to feel nervous about asking someone to leave where they don't belong in the first place. If they weren't so rude, it wouldn't be an issue.

And we are just renting the landlord does not live in the building.

Call the police and ask them to take care of it. It's private property-they should not be hanging out there.

Where are their mothers anyway?

probably sitting on someone else's steps glad their hoodlum-kids aren't around.

call the police...it can't hurt...just ask to have someone drive around when you're not there/haven't spoken to them so that they don't retaliate? hth

Well they are always saying 'If you see something, say something. ' I know that is an MTA mantra but you never know what people are capable of. You have every right to protect yourself as a citizen.

When I was growing up, if there was a car parked across the street from our house with someone sitting in it, my parents would call the cops. Our neighborhood had 4 car driveways - there was no need for parking in the street. They could have been casing the neighborhood.
