would you eat 20 yr old cake?

I found this old recipe on this site while trying to look up WOTY. I thought you guys would get a kick out of it!

100 Year Old Recipe for Wedding Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

50 eggs
5 pounds sugar
5 pounds flour
5 pounds butter
15 pounds raisins
3 pounds citron
10 pounds currants
1 pint brandy
1/4 ounce cloves
1 ounce cinnamon
4 ounces mace
4 ounces nutmeg

No directions are given for this cake, just the ingredients. The recipe comes from the book, 'Centennial Buckeye Cookbook,' published in 1876.
It says this makes 44-1/2 pounds of cake and will keep for 20 years!

Oh, yuck...

On the other hand though, it would be extremely romantic to be able to share your say, wedding cake, with your children at your 20th year anniversary....

But thinking about it now, the calendar was probably different back then....and if it wasn't, eewww again...I'll pass.

I think we are going to eat our topper during our honeymoon instead of waiting for our anniversary

LOL I know girls I just cut and paste exactly what what was on the website.
A little history for you. There use to be candies made out of coke. Coca Cola also had cocaine in it, and most medications back then were made out of cocaine, majriuna, herion, or opein (spl).

it's a chemical that it used by cops (and civilians) to spray in a perpetrators eyes. it temporarily blinds you I can't believe the ingredient 'mace' would be this same chemical mace, which is poison.

here is the definition of mace

Re: would you eat 20 yr old cake?

I did a search engine on mace and this is what I found.

Description
Both Mace and Nutmeg are derived from the fruit of the same tree, Myristica fragrans. Mace is the thin, bright red aril or lace-like covering over the shell of the Nutmeg. Its flavor is similar to Nutmeg but more delicate.

Uses
Mace is used in soups, cream sauces, lamb, chicken, potted meats, cheeses, stuffing, sausages, puddings, ketchup, baked goods, and donuts. It is used in French, English, Asian, West Indian, and Indian cuisines, and the spice blends garam masala, curry, and rendang.

Origins
The primary source of Mace is Indonesia. Historically, Mace originating from the East Indies has been considered premium due to its bold orange color, rich flavor and high volatile oil content. Mace produced in the West Indies is yellowish in color and has a milder flavor.

Folklore
Until the 18th Century, the world's only source of Mace and Nutmeg was the area known as Indonesia. When the Dutch took control of this area, Mace and Nutmeg were among the richest prizes. Knowing these spices did not grow elsewhere, they proceeded to establish one of the tightest monopolies the world has ever known. There is a legend that it was a Frenchman who started the erosion of Dutch control by smuggling seedlings out of the East Indies. True or not, it is a fact that a series of transplantings did occur and a number of other areas began producing these spices.
